If You Own a Black Car...

... what LSP combo works best for you? Considering black cars are the most difficult to maintain and keep swirl-free, what is your favorite(s) combo and/or why?

As of right now, I just use multiple coats of 4* UPP.

depends on your situation.

when I used to park my black 540i in the garage, then I'd use 4*UPP topped with souveran wax. Looks just incredible but not long lasting.

Now that it's parked outside, it's got EX topped with collinite insulator wax 845 -- easily the longest lasting carnauba product I've used.

:rofl

What is the difference in durability between these two? I never got very much more than 2 weeks out of PS in the weather but the good thing is it is easy to reapply. I have to say that Z2p seems to be the best of everything IMHO. Atleast on black!

I find I'm pretty much screwed no matter what I do, the counties round here dump so much salt and sand on the road almost anything is eaten off pretty quickly. Last winter however a couple layers of EX topped with #16 actually lasted through decently well. Not perfect, didnt bead much, but you could definately tell it was still there. The car lives outside all the time too. I dont know, it worked for me in Michigan, I think you California guys should be able to think of something :D

I'm new to black. I have a new ss repaint on my daily driver '99 Crown Vic Police Interceptor and the Zaino line is working great so far. First off the durability and beading are outstanding. Dirt retention is minimal and with a foam gun I believe I'm keeping maring in the washing phase to a minimum. Drying with a blower is a snap with the Zaino treated car. Towel touch up is at an absolute minimum if needed at all. So again contact and maring are kept to a minimum. No spotting issues at all unless I'm stuck drying in direct sunlight and then a coat of Z8 cleans them up with no effort.

My thought process was to use a system that required the least contact with the finish as possible.

This seems to do the trick for me. I'm trying other products on my Porsches now but for the PI I'm definetly sticking with Zaino!

I've been experimenting and I've determined I like just about any sealant topped with natty's blue and maintained with OCW. The sealant I'm using at the moment is poorboys ex-p.

I wasn't to thrilled with EX-P or UPP on my car. The durability with the two just seems to lack from what I seen on my car as well as others. As of now I have Meguiar's #21 on my car and it looks good and still feels pretty slick. Only time will tell about durability as I just applied it a week ago and the weather has been fairly mild.

I have not noticed any differences between EX-P, UPP, #21 or P21s in the looks department. They all look good, I didn't get a "deep glow" or "sharp, black glass" look :nixweiss .

They all looked great, so at this point i'm going to use whatever gets me good durability which i'm hoping #21 can do for me until spring comes and bust open the TS. :dance

I started freaking out every time I saw the slightest blemish in my finish, fueled by the perfect looking cars that appear on this site. I finally realized that I couldn't use a swirl remover once a week unless I wanted my clear coat gone in a year and focused my efforts on: 1) minimizing swirls while washing and 2) using products that helped minimize the appearance of swirls. I've been using Meg's #7 and then #26. I do this about every 4 - 6 weeks so I'm not too worried about durability. In between waxing, I use EO WAUD - gives the finish that shine I'm looking for. My car is a 2005 black Cadillac CTS, garage at night, garage at work, the rest of the time being baked by South Florida's sun. Thinking about Pinnacle' souveran over Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant as I have recently picked these up.

IMO Kilodawg has the right idea- keep it from getting marred in the first place. The choice of LSP can matter as some really retain contamination while others are virtually self-cleaning. I use UPP on my S8 because dirt just doesn't stick to the slick finish. But yeah, I have to reapply it all the time to *keep* things that slick. Some waxes such as Meg's #16 and Collinite are great in this regard too. Conversely, some have been *awful* in this regard (notably Souveran, which I still like for other reasons and Griot's BOS). Just gotta try different LSPs and shampoos until you find what works for you, and then work on the wash technique.

Same ol' same ol' - IMO if you have a black car (or if you otherwise care about marring, after all, clear is clear no matter what's under it ;) ) you oughta be washing with a foamgun. Only way I can wash without marring. Ask Bill D about how you *can* keep a black car marring free. Oh, for winter [stuff] that gets caked on the finish, shoot the foam through the bristles of a BHB while *very gently* rocking the brush on the finish, with just enough contact to keep the bristles touching the paint but not enough to bend them. It takes a while (ever spend ten minutes washing a single panel? Still less time than it takes to polish out marring and reapply the LSP) but it works great. It's all about moving the abrasive dirt off the paint without rubbing said dirt *into* the paint.

Johnny - were you using old or new ex? The new ones durabilty seems much better to me.

I was using the older ones. It wasn't just durability that annoyed me it was staining on the trim, no matter how thin or careful I applied. I even get the staining a little bit with PwC, which makes me believe its something with the polymers Poorboy's uses.

In the winter I've been using Z2 and topping it with S100. This year I'm going "no Zaino" just for kicks. I've tried NXT and it washed off after the first car wash. Then I moved on to RMG with Nattys on top. Two weeks and it's still there but that doesn't mean much. :D

Good luck, and welcome to the laborious task of owning a black car! LOL

Is the packaging different between the two? I've had EX and EX-P since last August - probably new EX, right?

The difference between Souveran and Collinite 845 IW? It's the difference between lasting a few weeks versus a few months.

Thanks everyone for the input! This should give me an idea of what I should try out next. Unfortunately, my car sits outside 24/7 in the California sun ;)

Any of you here own a nighthawk black pearl of flamenco black pearl-colored Acura Integra or similar? I'd really like to bring out the metallic in the car while maintaining a 1 to 2 month durability. Any suggestions? Thanks again.
