I used Meg's for my FIRST full detail...

First I'd like to say thank you for everyone involved with Autopia. You guys are super HELPFUL and KNOWLEDGABLE and I'm glad to be a part of this forum. I am a CONVERT to the REAL way to care for the appearance of our vehicles...

A little background: I got interested in detailing while my Integra was in the shop getting new paint (RED w/ GOLD pearl). I researched this site for numerous hours and this weekend I decided to test out my new skills and toys on my dad's 1995 BMW 325i. (Gotta get the process right before working on MY baby!!!) So here is how it went...

After Wash/Clay/Wash/Dry, I polished with #80 speed glaze and an orange pad, then followed with #9 and the blue pad (Sonus kit).

Q1: Was following #80 with #9 useless? I didn't really notice any significant difference between the applications...

Next I decided to finish with #7 and #16 which isn't real durable (esp. in the winter!!!) knowing that I would try something else soon (most likely Klasse or Wolfgang)...

Q2: Does #16 bond ok on top of the #7? The #16 seemed to wiped off a little TOO easily and maybe took away from the gloss and depth of the #7

Q3: What would YOU use on this paint?

I've got WG,UPP, EX-P, and KSG for sealants and Natty's, P21S and #16 for waxes.

Yes I have officially caught the bug!!! At least my cars will look good FOR LIFE thanks to the guys at this site.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers and Happy Detailing!!!

Hi dpeezy415,

Question #1: Perhaps using #9 was useless. First off, did you really need an Orange pad w/#80? Most cases 2 passes of #80 w/polishing pad gets rid of a good amount swirls. You could of used #80 with an orange pad, followed by #80 w/polishing pad. From what I understand, #80 leaves a much nicer finish.

Question #2: I can't really comment on #16 bonding to #7, don't really have any experience with it. I would guess there shouldn't bea problem, same company.

Question #3: What kind of a look are you going for, and what durability are you looking for?

Wolfgang gives a very Carnauba look. Very wet looking, very slick. But the durability lacks a little IMO.

UPP may be a good choice for your car, topped w/Natty's or P21S would be a great combo. From what I understand UPP has pretty good durability.

KSG, if you can get it to work for you, another good choice. I personally have had no luck with it, pain in the butt to remove for me.

EX-P, great choice for depth and clarity. But I have heard people lately talking about durability issues. I can't speak on this because I redo everything after a month or 2, until I found FMJ that is. But EX-P is being reformulated. Steve@Poorboy's is coming out with EX-P+ which appears to be pretty good stuff.

If I can make a recommendation you don't have, go with FMJ. You will blow yourself away with this stuff. But you have to remember that final product is nothing without proper prep.

Thanks for the input O4cobra.

Sacramento huh? Do you have a shop? I'd love to come in and check out the operation and maybe get some tips... paid for of course :)

16 over 7 is fine, and 16 actually IS very long lasting; it's a traditional heavy carnauba wax. A better choice from within the Meguiar's line, though, would be #26 in the waxes, and #20 or NXT in the synthetics. #26 is killer on reds and blacks. #20 and NXT are both longer lasting than #16. They will have a new product in the tan bottle line, #21 synthetic. Figure an improvement over existing products, but exactly how is unknown.

I'm a Meg's lover, and I still haven't found a place for #9. There are at least 3 other Meg's products that will do the same job better then #9 (80, 82, MPPC).

As far as what to use, do the prep right and then have fun with the LSPs. You'll find one that "pops" FOR YOU, and that's the one you should use. I've tried everything that you have except the WG, and I keep coming back to #26, NXT, and Souveran, in a loose rotation.

Thanks Mosca, BTW, I love the Megs line too... easy to find locally and super reliable with stunning results.

There is a super sale at PremiumAutoCare.com and almost all of WG is on sale if you wanna check it out, along with Poorboys and some other products. That's where I got my stuff!!!:up

No I don't have my own shop. I am just a family and friend kind of guy at the moment. But hope to possibly start my own mobile business on the side in the near future. Depending on how new you are, I don't have any problem teaching you a couple of things. I myself don't know everything and am still learning, but if you are new w/PC or just want a couple of opinions, let me know. By the way, I'm in Orangevale to be specific!!
