I think it's time....

...to start up a small business. I am hesitant because I don't know what to expect, but I'm sure it will be a good learning experience.

Where do I begin? My name is already out there from detailing for a mobile detailer in the area two summers ago (and part of last summer, but that's a story that isn't really important) We did good work, but I don't think he is going to be doing a whole lot of detailing this season (and even if he is, I don't want to work for anybody else when it comes to detailing). I can advertise on a local car forum. I'm going to be doing a friends WRX in a few weeks (there's a picture of it in my gallery somewhere)--she'll get the word out too. So I think I can manage to get some customers.

Actually, it's kind of funny. Last summer I received a call from somebody I had never talked to before. This was on my cell phone, so somebody must have given it to him. He wanted advice and to borrow my PC backing plate because he was waiting on his. So I guess my name is out there. My work has a good reputation.

I have most of the supplies. I'll need more towels and pads, of course. Clay too. Basically supplies are covered.

My main questions are: do I want to pick a name, or just use my name?

Where do I go to cover legalities (taxes, insurance, and if I choose a name)?

Am I missing anything? How scary. But how fun it will be doing something this summer that I enjoy and not dealing with disgruntled grocery store shoppers!

I can tell you that you will definitely want to make a legally binding document of some sort that outlines the service, conditions, payment methods, delivery time, guarantees, disclaimers, etc. It would be very bad to get into a legal bout and not have any substantial evidence to back yourself up.

I'd have it printed on that carbon copy paper so you can give them a receit of the work done.

Insurance for your work is probably a good idea, but I think that is something you'll have to consider along with other factors.

I've never done formal business detailing, but the idea runs through my head at least once a week. I may be totally wrong about all this.
