...I tried a rotary polisher. I had just bought a 82, VW Scirocco with horrible paint. The clearcoat had hazed over and there were bright red spots showing through the haze after I washed it. Closer inspection revealed the spots were actually the base paint with no clearcoat. I was not ready to paint the car, yet. But, I couldn't live with the spots. So, I decided to take off all the clearcoat. I was beginning to think this was a mistake since my PC just was not up to the task. Then, I borrowed my neighbor's rotary buffer. He also suggested wet sanding with 600 then 1200 before buffing. What a difference. The rotary peeled the the clearcoat off in no time leaving a great shine. I figure I'll finish the job next weekend and then "seal" the paint with a polymer of some sort (Zaino or Meguire's 20). As long as I keep the sealant on I should be able to protect the look until I'm ready for a paint job some time next year.
