I love driving

For those who dunno, I'm a young'un here and I just turned 16 a week and a half ago. I went with a local driving school and today I started my mandatory 6 hours for a permit...

I freakin loved it :D We were rolling around in circles in a parking lot so that was pretty easy but I started trembling when my instructor told me to pull onto a main busy road. I started driving around and onto smaller streets but damn I was bloody nervous.

After driving about 6 miles I calmed down big time. I really enjoyed it a lot

The car I used was a 2004 Civic DX barebones model and it is a slow car. I had to floor it several times but that just resulted in barely any traction. Plus, it's been pouring on and off in Jersey so the wet road but it harder for the puny tires to grip.

Anyways, yah had to share my love of driving even if were a crappy Civic :cooleek:

BTW: DMV in Rahway LOVES to give you a hard time

Welcome to the world of stress, rush hour traffic, granny drivers, rising gas prices, ridiculous insurance premiums and addicting modifications.

Yah I glanced at it as my instructor pulled in. Seems intricate. Don't worry, I'll fail it next year :doh

Good news is I don't have to take the written test anymore. Boy did I hate that damned test

I've been driving for roughly 7 years now and still don't get tired of it. I don't think I ever will! :)

I'd hesitate to call a 2004 Civic a crappy car, even in DX model minus all the creature comforts and A/C and the like... serves perfect for those learning how to drive.

If the DMV in Rahway LOVES to give you a hard time maybe it was due to you peeling the tires- rain or otherwise- if it has such a low amount of power you should be really having to go out of your way to get it to spin them. :nixweiss

I don't care about creature comforts when it comes to car testing. It had an A/C and all but like there was this horrible squealing sound when you pressed the brakes and it's very hesitant to downshift. Perhaps it was just our car.

Nah, we don't practice at the DMV for permit. They were giving me a hard time since my passport had a picture of me of when I was like 4 and the guy was like "You don't look like that". Well obviously that picture was in 1994 and today is 2006... And there was a slight difference in my name and he pointed that out too and made me wait as he talked to his superiors. I was holding my temper in knowing I wasn't going to go anywhere if I were to argue with him.

I just did the last June at the Edison DMV. My parents got annoyed eventually becaue I always wanted to drive everywhere. I'm taking the test June 1st. Shouldn't be too hard-- I'm really excited :)

Another reason why I hate the Civic: I hate the damn brakes. Either because of the 3rd instructor pedal messed up the brake feeling or they are damn hard to modulate. I pressed it lightly to come to a smooth stop... 'cept it didn't want to stop. So I press it harder but then it wants to lock up as soon as possible. I like want something in between that I can't seem to get to. I believe it was a front disc/rear drum set up.

And another biggie that I have a billion people yelling me at: I hate driving with both hands. I really really do. But I will fail the road test if I don't use both hands.

I wouldn't worry about the Civic so much, it's not like its your car. I drove a Toyota Corolla w/ over 250k miles on it when I got my permit..lol

The actual road test is so easy it's actually scary, at least at the Wayne DMV. You get your license then getting onto rt 46 is so hard, not to mention it splits into 3 different highways. :help:

I never hold the wheel with both hands. Even before with my truck which was automatic, I also drove with one hand, I dunno why. As long as you keep them at 2 and 10 for the test you'll be fine.

No highly skilled or professional divers steer with one hand. Just watch footage of or read any books by real drivers, race, rally, stunt, etc and you’ll see. It’s about having control of the vehicle and with one hand you simply don’t have as much. The best drivers in the world are the ones who were first given paddle shifters, allowing them to shift without removing their hands from the wheel.

Now, if you’re just cruising along some straight road with hardly any traffic the reality is that you can keep a car with power steering moving straight with one finger. But as soon as you actually need to turn, especially any kind of quick maneuver, you’ll have a far higher level of control with both hands.

If you want to be a good driver (and I mean that in an actual skill sense, not the politically correct transportation establishment/insurance company dogma sense) you’ll learn to use both hands (if not all the time, at least when you turn).

PC.

Oh I turn with both hands. I feel uncomfortable not doing that but like for straight driving or roads with slight curves I just use one hand... to the dismay of my parents and instructor

That brings back memories of my days in driver's education back in high school. We lived in Coral Gables at the time, I went to Coral Gables Sr High and I learned to drive in downtown Miami :D I still recall the road trips to the donut shop the instructor used to take us on. We were lucky, we had if I recal about 10 brand new Olds Cutlas Supremes and a very large area on campus to practice.
