I have lost interest

I have always kept my vehicles looking like I was going to a car show with them.
If I only drove it 20 miles I would wipe it down with S&W when I got home.
Ever since my last back surgery I have so much pain that it is really hard to get motivated.

I still keep them cleaner than 99% of what I see on the road but I no longer feel like keeping them as clean as an operating table.

I just don't have the drive to maintain them like I did in the past. :wall

BB about this time of the year I get the same feeling...its year end for the detailing season and I've had enough of cleaning..my cars included.

I don't have the back problems you have so I'm sure that makes it even harder.

Take the winter off and see how you feel about it come spring:D

If you're in the top 1% of what's on the road there's nothing to stress over.

And over time your back will feel better, the sun will come out, days will lengthen and you'll probably feel more motivated than right now. A bit of a break isn't a bad thing.

This time of the year is a busy time in Northern Indiana painting the deck gather up leaves getting things ready for winter.

In the past month I have redone the undercoating on 4 of my vehicles, the others will not be driven till spring so they don't need it.

Summer time it is easy to keep it clean but that will soon change in about a month it will start snowing and when I go anywhere my Explorer will look like it was drove through a salt mine. :wall

Doctor says my back will not get better they have done all they can do.
I worry about all the prescription pain killers that I have to take daily will eventually take their toll on me as well.

I saw on TV last night a new device that they implant into the spine and it delivers a mild electrical shock at a very fast rate and you do not feel all that pain, I may look into that.

For me, it comes and goes. Right now, I am at an in-between period I suppose, where I think fondly of getting to work on my vehicles but not to the point where I actually want to go out and polish all day or clean the grille with a toothpick and Q-tip.

Understood. I have fallen out from the "it's always perfect" crowd. As I age I'm not as concerned with perfect wheel wells or a spot on the car here or there. I'm still proud when our two cars are clean & sparkling but it isn't quite the demand that it once was.

I as well have had back surgery and know that it gets rough sometimes. I had Fusion done on L5-S1. What are you going through? I'm 3 years out, and I'd say I'm back at at least 90%. I'm also just 22 though. I assume there's quite a bit of difference in recovery rates.

Don't do anything too early, rushing your recovery. I re-tore the muscles on either side of my spine 3 different times by trying to do too much.

Bart,

I went through this a couple of years ago and I can't honestly tell you that I've fully recovered. Between the back fusion, the knee replacements and the destroyed shoulder I just can't do it as frequently as I once did. When I get after it I still do the best job I know how but I pay for putting that kind of effort into it. 6 hours of detailing costs me 36 hours of recovery time sometimes longer in the knees and shoulder. If anyone would have ever told me that I would be this old at my age I never would have believed it. ;)

If I do a full detail it takes me 3 days I can not work long without breaks but I do most of it sitting on a stool because my back only hurts bad when standing.

I hope that I will get better but the surgeon said I would not improve any after 12 months and it has been 16 months.

I will soon be 77 so not going to ever do what I did years ago but I appreciate the encouragement.

Do it. My Stepmother had one implanted after years of pain, surgeries and frustration. She's now pain-free for the first time in decades! YMMV.

There is also an external electrical device that will do that too.

Called "tens" transcuttainious electrical nerve stimulator" (sp)

These are available widely, and not too expensive.

I have a tens unit and like you say it only helps for a short time.
I tried wearing it all day but keep getting the wires caught on stuff and tearing them off.

I tried the shots and they did nothing for me but they helped my wife, It all depends on what is wrong and how bad it is whether it helps or not.

The device that they implant in the spine is my last chance I have tried everything else and they all failed including 2 surgery's.
