I chickened out

I was going to detail my engine and I chickened out when I saw all the electrical parts. Maybe I will get more courage later in the day.

You can do it, use aluminum foil to wrap any electrical parts that you think might be in danger of water problems, you shouldn't have any problems.

I would use (of have used) plastic bags to cover the coil/distributar(sp?)/or any exposed electrical items. Use a rubber band to keep them in place when ever you can. Don't be scared to wet sensors as they are water tight, when it rains out trust me it gets everywhere. From the factory "most" sensors and electrical items under the hood are h2o tight. YOU CAN DO IT.....

I agree with the others. A engine detail was actually the first detail I done to my car. Never done it before and came out nice. I covered everything that I thought might be unsafe for water to come in contact with with aluminum foil, I like using the foil because you can "mold" it to whatever the shape is your protecting.

The problem with using foil *I think* that it is conducive and may end up grounding itself and sorting out something. Water+conductive material+ground=let's not find out..

Actually, now that I think of it I did notice some "sparks" when I detailed my girlfriends car where the alternator is kinda on top and I covered it with foil, and it did spark. So maybe foil on sertain parts is not a good idea.

That's why I prefer the plastic bag with rubberband route just safer. One thing to note that after wetting or detailing the engine keep the hood up and let it air dry for a while before you start it her up. Good luck Demon....don't be scared it's pretty simple.

You should be fine as long as you don't spray a high pressure stream into the protective boots.

There fine.....but you "should" be use dielectric grease on them any way. Dielectric grease forms a seal to keep arcing from the plugs to the headers/heads. They also keep the plug boots from becoming stuck on the spark plugs making life easier when the time comes to change S. plugs (keeps moisture/contaminants out).

Umm.. so far you might have been ok using foil.. however, IMO, you are pushing your luck wraping electrical components with conductive metal foil.

If you must wrap those components, just use saran wrap.

Actually, your engine, and its electrical parts are already pretty water tight.

unless its an OLDER car with a distributor, you shouldnt have any problems.. if you get water in the distributor cap, the car might not start, or it might run like crap.. just pull the cap, and blow it out with a air hose.

I forgot about this thread, I toughened up and detailed the engine, let me get me before and after pictures together.
