Hello Autopians,

Well I've been polishing with the PC and man do I like what it does to deepen paint and fix up small problems, but try hard as I might, the swirls and deeper scratches will not go away; big ones yes, but the smaller ones are ALWAYS there :hairpull and I don't have the patience to keep going over spots unless it's my family or friends cars. I've already made up all the money I spent so far this year on detailing goods (~$1000) and decided it would be good to make a final investment into a REAL buffer. Now that I've picked out the Makita, I need anyone and everyone to chime in about all the pads and backing plates that I will need and where to get them. I've done a search and it was quite inconclusive. Also, if it helps, I already have Propel Pads for my PC (1 Orange, 1 Yellow, and 2 of the Green, Blue, and Grey) and a 5-inch backing plate that I know wont work with the Makita.

Thanks in advance.

The 4.75 inch BP from Autogeek is all you need if you want to continue using your PC pads, which is what I do. Make sure you order the rotary plate though or they will send you the 5" PC plate.

Good call, I made the same step up about a month ago. I got a 4.75 inch flexible backing plate, and I use the 6" propel pads that I bought for my PC. Additionally, I use a few 7.5" wool pads with the 6.5" Makita BP.

You could get 7.5" foam pads too, I just haven't bought any yet. I feel that the 6" pads are easier to control, and I haven't reached the point with a rotary where I feel that I can finish with a 7.5" pad without leaving trails.

So where should I order more wool pads? And should I continue using Propel Pads, or would Lake County be the way to go for a rotary?

I use a orange cutting pad and 3m 3000grit rubbing compound. They will come out with that, guaranteed! I'll show ya! You can burn up the paint with a makita or Dewalt. I rather have a PC because of the less chance of removing or burning paint.

Optimum makes a great wool pad, according to Anthony Orosco. I don't think they have the pads on their website, but if you call them you should be able to get a few. Pick up a bottle of Optimum Polish while you're at it, thats my favorite polish to work with via rotary.
