I am not impressed by those that detail high dollar vehicles

I was thinking about this this morning. Everyone seems to post pictures of high dollar cars that every one obsesses over. Most of these vehicles are in pretty good shape that do not require a ton of correction. I have more respect for those that are out doing the soccer moms mini-vans and everyday drivers of those that typically do not hire a detailer. Those are the vehicles that are re-born and have become works of art with a stroke of a detailers brush.

I guess it depends. I've seen high dollar luxury and sport cars in far worse shape than any mini van and visa versa. It's more in the before and after pics to me.

lol you new here still.... I got my a$$ compltetly chewed out and spit on when I voiced this exact same opinion. But in all reality 99% of the soccar mom detailers couldn't touch the high end exotics and visa versa. We all have our different niches. The reason that the "high dollar" cars get more press here is simply because they are rarer to see. I mean who really cares what process was taken on cleaning up that 1999 town and country? or that Used Dodge ram on the corner lot? We see those every day. And they are posted on here. But those only get a reply or two and then the thread just dies. Then you get someone detailing a very babied ferrari claiming 50+ hours of correction on it and it goes for 30 pages. ehh I don't get it but it seems to be what sells on here. Hopefully you don't get chastised to much for voicing this opinion.

I would be much more impressed over someone reviving a 1990 Ford minivan through multiple levels of compounding/polishing to reveal a better-than-new finish than someone else washing and waxing a Ferrari F(choose your favorite). The main reason *I* would oohh and ahh over a detailed supercar is if the detailer put in a similar amount of effort as my minivan example. Unfortunately, many of these new high dollar cars require many hours of work to truly make them perfect due to the fact that another detailer messed them up or they came that way out of the factory.

IMO, you can argue both sides of this point. Yes, the transformation of a neglected DD can be dramatic. Even with a relatively minor amount of effort. However, this does not detract from the level of skill required to perfect the finish of an exotic or garage queen.

I enjoy seeing turnarounds no matter what the car.

One thing that needs to be said though is that your title should probably read that you are not impressed by high dollar details, not that you arent impressed by those who do it.

I would agree to a point. I also try to judge based on the before and afters. At the end of the day paint is paint, but working on a classic or a $250,000+ exotic car requires a different mind set IMO.

I do however give much more respect to the detailers who have worked there way up from doing soccer mom mini vans, and have now gained the skills, knowledge, and reputation which allows them access to such vehicles. ;)

The visual improvement may not be as dramatic on exotics, but there's a lot of subtlety and commitment do detail that goes into getting a perfect paint finish on these cars. How often do you see someone take a 3" pad to 4 step polish a difficult access area on a minivan or Camry?

That said, services like mold removal, urine stain and odor removal, and highly detailed interior detailing don't get due respect on this board.

Both definitely have their place..IMO.

But, Its definitely more work detailing a DD that gets beat around from nature's elements (rain, hail, sleet, snow, insert your favorite weather here)...than a garage queen that sits and festers in a garage and gets rubbed with a diaper..

I hate how these threads get soo much action! Who cares if they post pictures or not, its their choice, right? Just look or dont and go about your business.

There are ALOT of people that do exotics and don't post them on here, me being one of them. Some people don't like all the hype i guess. Everyone's different!

I also agree with Longhorn to a point. I respect the guys with the skills to properly detail exotic cars. I relate to the guys who do the minivans, econoboxes, and assorted ash and trash. As an amateur detailer I am inspired by the turn arounds more than the concours level exotic details.

Every exotic that I have ever done has been a total mess and has been hacked before I got it. Think about how many times the car gets wiped down improperly just to show it off.

Also kids at dealerships can't wait to get their paws on these cars and end up hacking them.

I have been polishing since, when Pintos and Gremlins were cool.

All of the high end cars you see posted were detailed by guys that also started detailing vans, truck and other daily drivers. It should give you something to strive towards not make an unnecessary thread about

I don't argue that at all, but I find polishing to be the easy work....which is probably why I hate doing interiors. :D

I agree to an extent. The main difference is that the quality of paint on a Ford vs. a European car is dramatically different. You also don't ever see anyone paying for your expertise, and top quality chemicals on a Minivan. One time we gave away a Vintage detail at a Ferrari Concours, and the winner had a 99 Subaru Outback. This was the cleanest shiniest Subaru Outback you have EVER seen after a two day detail. Ferrari and Lamborghini owners will pay top dollar for your expertise, because the want the top quality results, and they want to feel secure that their car is in good hands in a good shop.

Let me ask a question to the OP....If given the choice, would you rather detail a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee or a 2006 Porsche 911 Turbo? Both are in well below average condition.

Just curious.

I'm not the OP but that's an easy answer and one that will put more money in my pocket and probably lead to more referrals.

Porsche 911 any day
