How to use a Clay Bar

I know I sound like a newbie and you are probably thinking "Oy Vey, this guy can't be serious!" , ut I have heard wonders about using clay bars to remove contamination but I am not sure how to use them. I have read that you apply some instant detailer and lightly rub the bar over the contaminated areas. Is that all there is to it?

Since i have 2 new cars, I don't want to create more problems by scratching the finish by using this. I would like to have a nice smooth paint finish so when I get the Klasse and put the AIO and SG, I can get a nice glossy look.

If someone can give me pointers on the proper use of the Clay Bar that would be great :bow

Thanks

This might be a dumb question. I have read about the clay bars and some people use only part of the clay bar at a time. I read that you have to throw away the clay bar if you drop it on the ground. Assuming that it hasn't rolled, so only one side gets dirty, couldn't you just cut off the contaminated part (with some extra as a margin of safety), and throw that away? And then continue with the uncontaminated part?

The biggest thing that I can say about clay, and there might be some diffarant opinions about this, I use soapy water instead of QD. I do a dawn wash, and leave the car wet, then I spray a mixture of 1/10 soap/water mixture on the area I'm working on.

Yea, the soapy-water-while-washing is a good idea, but not so if you're using the Mother's bar. (I dropped it twice.) The Mother's bar is very slippery when wet and IMO works best following their directions- use a QD on a dry panel!

How about the other clay bars? I hear Clay Magic is more rubbery... and Z18 isn't as slippery.
