How to take "great" before and after pictures?

I've been wanting to showcase my work for awhile now but i really cant afford a DSLR camera. I have a 8mp point and shoot camera from wal-mart that is almost 2 years old. Can i take great shots with this camera? If it is sunny out, do i turn off the flash? Or if i am inside using my work light, do i have to turn off the flash? I've been playing around with my camera for a while now and i cant figure it out. It's either too bright from having too much flash or too dark. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can get great shots with any camera that is moderately recent and a good brand. You definitely want to avoid using the flash. A tripod and setting the camera on its lowest ISO setting will yield good results. Playing with exposure compensation will brighten your images. I even get good results with an iPhone so a real point and shoot is no limitation.

The other thing that leads to better photography is to be critical of your own work. Find something you don't like about a picture and work to fix them. A lot of newbs like to blame their camera. Check out kenrockwell.com for great shots with some low buck cameras.
