how to remove window tint??

well, they finally caught me. bought the car from a STL guy and had it for a year. Window tint on the driver/pass windows is legal im MO but not in IL...and they finally had a tax collectors speed trap put up on the 29th of November to catch me. Question is now...how do i remove it? Just a razor blade?

I'm a little confused . . . your location is shown as St. Louis. Have you recently moved to IL? My understanding is that as long as your tint is legal in the state where the car is registered and licensed, you can't (or shouldn't, anyway) be ticketed for tint when in another state that has more strict regs.



Any legal beagles care to chime in?

haha i just put StL because i actually live in Edwardsville, IL, on the other side of the river and 15min from STL....nobody knows where Eville is tho.
 
Wait :scared boostdfd3s!! I was in a similar situation about 3 yrs ago. Bought a tinted car in California and brought it to Mo., where it was (at that time) completely illegal. First inspection station "flunked" the car because of the tinting. But I asked around, found a friend who had a "reasonable" mechanic. Took it to them, mentioned this guy's name (he was a long-time customer of theirs), and they passed it. Mind you, this was not a heavy tint. And when I took it to that station, I began -- before shelling out my $$$ -- by asking the guy, "Somebody said this tint is illegal. Do you think it'll pass?" He had me sit in the car, looked at it from this angle and that, and said, "well heck yeah." So I then went thru the whole inspection. Now, maybe is IL's laws are way-harsh or maybe your tinting is really dark, in which case you may have to remove it. But you might try this approach first. 'Cause removing the tinting sounds like a heckuva lotta trouble to me.

A friend of mine is a district attorney in IL. He got me the actual law....



(a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle with any sign, poster, window application, reflective material, nonreflective material or tinted film upon the front windshield, sidewings or side windows immediately adjacent to each side of the driver. A nonreflective tinted film may be used along the uppermost portion of the windshield if such material does not extend more than 6 inches down from the top of the windshield. Nothing in this Section shall create a cause of action on behalf of a buyer against a dealer or manufacturer who sells a motor vehicle with a window which is in violation of this Section.
 
Yeah, Missouri's law (at the time of my little adventure) was identical. But the guy still let me pass the vehicle inspection. The tinting was sufficiently light that a cop could not merely tell whether I had an Uzi in my hand, but could probably read a newspaper if I were holding one.
