There's a guy called Drew Brophy who paints surfboards with Sharpie pens, clears them off and sells them for truckloads he's done pretty well for himself, perhaps this guy's trying to emulate this or do his own thing? He seemed pretty pleased with himself.
It's actually a trend I've seen here within the past few years. Well done sharpie cars actually look pretty amazing and the amount of detail flavor that can be incorporated in the design is really amazing. One of my friends had his M3 sharpied and can be found in Heavy Hitter. Looking closely at it, you can see the artist took cues from the OC/LA subculture in his artwork.
I've talked with the guy that does the sharpie work and he said that clearing over it is next to impossible because it won't adhere correctly and it actually ends up ruining the work. Sucks with all those hours invested.
Sharpie black is kind of a warm tone to it too, so it's like super black cherry. He'll need to clear it with laqour from a professional air-fed gun, not a rattle can, b/c the chemicals in the rattle can will disolve the ink and make it run....then dry....which he will hate life after.
