How to apply pastes onto pads

How do you apply paste wax onto orbital buff pads? Do you dip your finger into the paste and rub it all over the pad? Do you use a butter knife? Do you use the applicator and transfer the paste onto the pad? And on the pad, do you apply it evenly all over the pad or just on some spots?

Just curious... bcos I find it hard to spread it out evenly.

That's why you don't apply pastes with a machine. ;) This is why the carnauba gods invented Liquid wax.

The methods that you mentioned are good ways of getting it on the pad if you wanted to do that. You could tap the jar upside down and shake the whole lump of wax out and then just rub that all over the pad.

I discovered that the wax comes out by complete accident. I was holding my jar of P21S and I sort of tipped it too far over. The whole jar came out in once chunk. Fortunatly it just landed on my windshield and slid down to my hood. I thought about it then. I could just take the whole chunk and rub it on a pad and then apply it that way. I think I'll stick to the old way. There is something calming about doing a job by hand once in awhile.

Yup, the machine seems great for removing swirls and stuff where you need pressure and speed, but waxing is something that's meant to be done by hand, IMO.

maybe if i heated the paste in the microwave for a few seconds as well? heheh...
Actually, yes. That's how Griot's suggests doing it, and some people have done it. Microwave, then spread it on with a putty/butter knife. Go to Griot's Garage and download his PDF file on how to use the PC - I think it's in there. I might try this with my #26 paste in the spring.

hmmm that doesn't sound right to me. I remember reading someplace that wax breaks down when it gets too hot? wouldn't a microwave break down the chemical properties of the wax?

I'm sure that is true when the wax is on your car. I don't know how bad a microwave would hurt it though. Keep in mind that it would only have to be in there for 2 or 3 seconds to get it warm enough to tap out of the can. You could probably do it just by holding the can long enough. Some of the wax may even evaporate. I would try tapping it out before microwaving it, but hey... whatever works. The wax that survives being nuked will still be fine to use on your car. No harm done to the moleculear structure or anything like that. :xyxthumbs
