How thick is clearcoat

On average how thick is the clearcoat on Ford cars? My Cobra sustained some damage and I want to be prepared when I see the ins. adjuster so he cannot say "It'll just buff out". Maybe it will buff out, but I am concerned that too much of the clearcoat was removed and buffing will leave it dangerously thin and reduce the life of the paint.

The clear coat layer is very, very thin! If your damage/scratches are down to the base coat, it will be almost impossible to "buff out". Besides, if you sustained enough damage to require an adjuster to look at it, I doubt that they will recommend just buffing it out anyway.

Clearcoat is under 2 mils thick. Typically it will range from 1.4 - 1.9 mils in thickness depending on paint type and auto maker.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I'll find out tomorrow what they say. I'm sure they will attempt to get out of paying for the damage (in case you can't tell I have little faith in Ins. Companies).

You may also want to check out www.autoint.com They have in-depth articles about paint systems including detailed descriptions of each layer and thier thickness. Also, has some good tech tips and other information. :up
