How the Americans view things in Britain

In order to cheer up my wife's little sister (just got dumped), I am going to detail her black civic hatch tommorrow. It's about 1.5 years old, and has, in all likelihood, never been waxed. (car wash, what's that?)

The roof has a number of "issues" - bird crap and sap "stains" (don't know how bad, just yet), which I plan to address. They may, or may not, have etched.

Anyway, I don't plan to spend no more than 4 hours on the thing, and will not buy anything (though I have quite a collection of products for "testing" :D) and want maximum bang for that time. Oh, and I plan to document it, before, during and after (god I love digital cameras!)

My current plan:

1. Wash (Gold Class Shampoo)

2. Clay the roof, possibly the hood.

3. (unknown)

4. AIO x2

5. SG x 1

6. Blitz

Step 3 is where I'm a little undecided. I have McG's "Clear Coat Body Scrub," 3m IHG, and 3m SMR. I'm not gonna buy anything for this car, and have ruled out the IHG since I will use the twins. The body scrub is a bit less abrasive than the SMR, but it did work wonders on my wife's altima (burgundy). Any thoughts?

The second question is this: she has hub caps, which are filthy with brake dust (and, again, probably have never been cleaned) - any downside to taking some acid based cleaners to 'em? Should they, like alloys, be waxed? If so, nufinish or klasse?

Finally, I have a "Turtle Waxer" - 10" Random orbit, 3k OPM. I do not use this thing on my cars (hand only), but have a complete selection of bonnets to do so. (I bought it 4 years ago, for a different car, before I "got into" detailing.) Worth braking out for this project?

TIA

I agree, use the SMR where needed. The IHG would be a waste, the oils left by the IHG would be removed by the AIO anyway.

Once you get the caps cleaned up, you can put a layer of Klasse on them. Or, if you dont want to use the good stuff on wheels, then NuFinish is always an option.

I'd also clay the front end, cuz if it hasn't been washed there's a good likely hood that there has been a mass build-up of junk.

I'd use the SMR on the whole car, cuz its got oils that feed the paint and will make it look more shiny.

As far as the hub caps, I use the Amor-all wheel cleaner on my parents cars whoose hub caps only get cleaned a few times a year....I really don't think you can do any harm to them if you use the acid based stuff for this job, it will do a great job cutting through the brake dust....just don't make a habit out of using it.

Also, you may want to consider using a second coat of SG instead of the Blitz, cuz it will look better and offer more protection in the long run. If you still want to use the Blitz then by all means go for it, but its going to be short lived on a black car.

Joed: The car has NOT been well maintained! (though no body damage, yet.

Steve: I wasn't going to put on another SG layer because of the "curing" issue. Secondly, I also have a black car, and have been less than thrilled with the SG alone look on it. That is, I like the shine, but the Blitz adds depth which i, personally, love. Maybe I'll do both, this time (i.e. 2xSG then follow with some Blitz).

My issue is that this is a one time (or twice yearly, maybe, she's been nice <em class='bbc'>lately[/i]), and I want maximum effect for the time I have.

No one has an opinion about the buffer?

Then go for both, all you'll be doing is making the layer of polymer thicker (someone correct me if im wrong).

As far as the buffer, if you know what your doing then go for it, but if you don't then id say do it by hand.

I have a Buffer like yours and use it with foam bonnets dampened with distilled water to apply AIO... a lot less work, no swirls (it is an orbital)

good time saver

My buddy has a 99 Tacoma which has been off roading and the whole nine. His paint is really really rough! I used about 6 layers of 3M Swirl Mark Remover, 3 layers of Meguairs Glaze and 1 layer of Meguairs Wax and it came out very very nice, no swirl marks at all, glass type feel to the paint and you could see yourself at 20 feet better than you could see yourself at 1 foot, no kidding.

Just giving you a little idea of how I dealt with crappy black paint. If your using 3M, then All-In-One then the Glaze, then wax I am sure you will be very very happy with the car, just make sure you prep the paint (remove junk fr the paint and swirl marks) because when your all done this can make a world of difference. If yu don't it's just like your magnifying the negative points of the car paint.

I will attest to this; absolutly any comment made about a Muslim, will have you branded as racist or bigoted (the other type of PC gone too far)

All you have to do is start reading Neil Boortz web site - there's usually a link to some stupid thing the Britts have done at least weekly. Last one I remember was arresting an ex-soldier for turning in a shotgun he found in his front yard - the charge, possessing a gun.

I know the USA is headed down the slippery socialist road, but I pray to God we fight back, and soon!

Thanks for posting all the information and comments above..

This topic is quite disturbing - until I thought back and remembered that the reason all the wonderful people from Europe and farther east and north, etc., came to this country at great expense and sacrifice, was to be able to worship in freedom and break away from the form of governments that existed at that time.

I dont believe that any other type of goverment will ever be allowed to
exist here now, and forever. There are just too many people, albeit many of them old, older, and oldest, that remember vividly the sacrifices they alone made to get here, and start over, in a country that offered so much hope and freedom. And we are all their great-grandchildren, grandchildren, etc..

Oh for sure, there is this strong movement out there, to do more of a Socialist approach to many things, but even those ideas will have to be put to bed again and again, as they have for generations past.

If we want to make a difference, we need to now, not tomorrow, or later, instill the truth about this country, the obviously inspired individuals, who helped draft its Constitutions and laws, and the great first President and others, who were really, really, the best men who could be at that lonely, challenging post, during their tenures.

Oh sure, there are a million voices that will try to tear these great people down and show you all the little things that were NOT great about them, but I believe we are all imperfect people trying to get better in a way more perfect world that we take for granted. All make mistakes, some try to repent and not make the same mistakes ever again. Some try to get better every day, one step at a time. Fortunately for all, there is a Supreme Being, who is patient, kind, loving, and long-suffering, that is really trying to help us be the best we can, and wants us one day to come back home to where we came from.

Just read some of Washington's letters or talks he gave on various subjects, same with Lincoln, and others.
These great individuals knew exactly where they stood on freedom in all its different forms, and none ever changed their core beliefs, and I for one am not ever going to either.

It may come down to that day where we all have to make a choice and be on that side of the line or this side - I for one will be more than ready to defend this side of the line in whatever form it takes to defend.

I have read that this very Constitution we learned about in school, that was written and worked over, for a very long time, but is still the most inspired set of laws ever written - may one day be hanging by a thread - but it will still be there.

We will all need to help insure the thread does not ever break, and that through much work, travail, uncertainty, challenges, etc., the thread is once again incorporated in the very fiber of that beautiful, broad, multi-colored,
all encompassing set of laws we all have been so fortunate to enjoy and obey.

We are all Americans for many great reasons, and pretty much everyone here has roots back in places that were not like here, and that is again, why our ancestors all decided to make the journey.

So let us not be afraid to voice our opinions, and stand united and stay the course. There are so many ways to do this legally, within the framework of the law - we just all have to stand up and do our part.

We can do this !
