How soon can one wax?

I just picked up my silver toyota solara two weeks ago? Is it too soon to wax it? My friends think I am nuts for wanting to wax a brand new car. I have only one regret so far. Not getting the clear bra installed. I got a freaking paint chip near my fog lights less than 24 hours after getting the car. Touch up paint has been ordered but will it be a waste of time?

touch up paint can look good depending on how good of a job you do. There is a touch up paint guide either in the Autopia book or on bettercarcare.com It is a lot of work to make it look good, but it can be done. Otherwise you can just put a little blob on it and be fine with it.

If your friends think your crazy for thinking about waxing your car two weeks after getting it, they havent seen anything. A lot of people get their brand new car (without any dealer prep) and then spend the next 4+ hours working on it... THE SAME DAY THAT THEY BUY IT.

And yes, you should definately wax your car now.

Hit the Learn icon on the top of this page and go to the How to articles by David B and others, so you can learn to keep that nice Solara looking new.

Thanks for the advice I plan to start my waxing this weekend. I will check out some older posts for good products. This site is going to be priceless. Hmmm what took so long for me to find it? Just what I need one more car site to make me even more fanatical about my ride.

It's also not a bad idea to clay it too. Cars are shipped by rail and many wind up with rail dust bonded to the surface.

And get used to paint chips. Since the paint has been reformulated to reduce VOC's from the solvents it has turned the paint much more brittle.

I like these products.

Both offer more precise application and you can build up layers to be even with your paint.

Why take a chance? Just wait the recommended amount of time before doing anything. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

solarafiedV6- You won't be taking any chances with your new car. Factory paint "cures" differently from repaints, and chances are the build date was some time ago anyhow. They wax new cars at dealerships all the time, it's just not an issue.

Yes, clay it, or better yet, use ABC or the decontamination system from FinishKare (search on these). Ferrous deposits in the paint ("rail dust") can turn into unsightly "rust blooms" if you don't get rid of them and they really show on silver. I *always* decontaminate my new vehicles, and it's eliminated the rust blooms.
