How soft is clearcoat?

I had a rather small but baked on bird dropping on the side of my car. I sprayed it with some waterless wash and wiped with a towel but it didn`t come off. I decided to try the edge of my fingernail on the backside of the MF towel. My fingernail scratched the paint through the towel. PPG Clearcoat doesn`t seem all that hard.

Depends on the clear used. I`ve worked with some that was soft and finicky and others that were hard as nails.

Sorry to hear that yours marred so easily...but should be easy to correct!

The amino acids in the dripping attacked and weakened the "resin system"-"binder/film former" the much the same as bleach attacks and eats cotton cloth. Therefore the density of the clear is weakened.

That is possible. I have had bird bombs etch paint before.
