How often do you use rotary?

I have been looking into getting a rotary and have noticed a wide range of prices. They all seem to have similar features. i know the price has to do with durability so i wonder with all these new products/polishes and the pc has the rotary become close to obsolete. I know there are some things that can only be accomplished with the rotary, but how often is it necessary for you pros to bust it out. I don't mean you use it because you like it or its convenient but when it is the only thing that will work. I really like the dewalt dw849 but its hard for me to spend that much extra for something I will hardly use. And if I hardly use it then the cheap ones seem like they will do. BTW I am not a pro but I would like to be in the future and the reason I ask is because I have a junk car that I can practice on for another month or so.

If you read the many threads discussing rotaries you will find that those of us who have them, use them. There are some things only a rotary can do.

PC's are very capable but they will never replace a rotary. Think of it this way: A rotary can give the results of a PC, but a PC cannot give the results of a rotary. If you want one machine to do it all, get a rotary and sell the PC. Once you've mastered the rotary you will have no need for a PC.

I won't go QUITE as far as Bretfraz, I'll always have a use for a random orbital. Sometimes rotary-induced holograms occur, and the RO is an easy, nonaggressive way to deal with them. Heh heh, if you're SO good with a rotary that you never get them, well, more power to you.

Another thing for you pros to consider is the time savings. Removing serious marring from hard clear can take literally HOURS with a PC, but the rotary will make short work of it. Time is money, right?

Something that seldom gets mentioned with inexpensive rotaries is their performance under load- some of them bog down. *I* want the rotary to consistently maintain the selected speed. *I* wouldn't want it slowing down by an unknown amount when it's under load. Same reason I often prefer the Cyclo over the PC.

I am pretty sure I am going to get a rotary. My dillema is should I get the cheapo or spring for the dewalt or makita. I don't think I'll ever sell my pc because I love it. I have also read where it is good to have pc to follow the rotary at times.

Accumulator you make a good point when you say time is money. I may have to spring for the dewalt and just learn how to get good with it. Thanks guys
