How much would you charge a friend for a full detail?

I know it depends on how close they are, but if you just met them a couple of times, and they're asking for a favor, would you do it for free or charge them, say the job calls for a $300 detail.

No such thing as a freebie, either at reduced cost or the cost of the porducts used and a supper to go with it.

I prefer to stay away from these type of situations. Hard to read whether this person is actually wanting to be a friend of just bum a deal.

Good friends are hard to come by and will be hooked up for life.

Thanks for the reply guys. The guy said he didn't have money for a $100 dollar detail (how much I said to him), and he can get his other friend to do it for $50, and at the same time he's saving for a Supercharger for his car... I guess his supercharger is worth than my time.

So he's a friend price shopper.

What a d*ck.

i've done details for free for close/good friends, and what you charge is up to you to determine. for myself, these people have done very nice things for me, without ever asking for anything in return and this is the least i can do. if i was offered to be given money, i probably wouldn't ask for more than $50...

I agree with Big Al to a certain extent. I have done free details for my closest friends, but I thought of it as a return of favors passed. But if this is a friend that you just met, and he's asking you for a favor, you told him $100, and now he's saying that he can get someone else to do it for $50, I'd tell him to go for it. Tell him that the products you use cost more than $50 and the time and work involved, just doesn't allow it. What you don't want to do is give him a $50 job (wash/wax) and have him say bad things to others. Just don't do it.

I've only done 2 free details for the same person. But he is the closest person to me outside my own relatives. He has already done so much for me, so that is just a portion that i can give back. But hey, if he cant afford at least 100 bucks for your hard work, then i say just skip it.

Send him to sacramento and i'll hook him up with a wash n' wax car wash. I think i still got some layin around. :chuckle:

+1, I do the same too.

Agreed, I wouldn't even consider that a "friend". Acquaintance, or "friend of a friend" max.

Either way, if the guy's telling you he can get someone else to do it for $50 then I'd tell him to go for it and that I don't even get sweaty for $50:nana:

I'm considering doing a detail for free for a lady I carpool with, just due to the fact that she's one of the few women I know personally that's into cars, and into taking care of her car's condition. More importantly, she's having a rough patch with her loser son (29 year-old that still needs to live with Mommy) that's draining her financially.:shocked

Yeah, I've done free details, i mean full details inside and out to my closest circle, but the thing that really ticked me off or for me to take the detail away was when he said "I'll get my friend to do it for $50 dollars." If he just went on to say "Oh Comon, just do it as a favor" or something in that line, then yeah, but he's putting another price on me. I mean this is in no way poor either, he had a $80k car before. He made seem that he's doing me favor... d*ck never the less. Oh well. Thanks for the replies guys, really appreciate it.

I think it depends on what a 'full detail' entails too, I was recently asked this by a neighbor, and I said $100 for a full one. That included polishing, lsp, full interior, etc. I'm not a pro though, so maybe I asked too much.

Nobody but family gets free details. Close friends will get reduced rates or exchange services.

This is my job, my time and knowledge is worth something. I have lots of friends when it comes to giving away details.

Last Saturday i did a full cut, polish, Z2x2 and quick interior for $100 for one of my oldest friends. I made some money and he was happy. He is a courier, i guess i could have asked him to drive 200 miles to pick me up a Coke.

I would have had to bite my tongue. That was his way of weaseling you into doing it for $50. He obviously has absolutely no concept of what goes into a quality detail If he were a paying customer, he'd be griping anyway.

This is similar, I think. I do my Moms car every now and then. Usually a wash, sometimes a wash and wax a few times a year. She mentioned a friend had her car "detailed" for $50 and he had the car all day. My Mom wanted to take her car to this guy? I am like what ?? I have been doing it. She does not want me to do all that work when I visit. ! ( I get a meal) My main reason is to visit and help out a little. I run out of time doing her car. I guess he only does a wash and wax, vacuum, windows etc. I usually don't vacuum, she does. Does this seem odd?
