How many layers of UPP is enough?

Had a chance this weekend to use UPP for the first time. Like the look, but I found UPP a little more difficult to remove than WG. I got a lot of build up on my MF when buffing off UPP to the point that it started to smear. No worries, the look is killer so it will become a favorite.

Just wondering if there is a limit to layering UPP, or a point where another layer has no effect on look?

Most people seem to start noticing a point of diminishing returns after the third coat, or atleast thats what I have read and seen in person.

But if you add a 4th coat and it looks better to you, well then, add a 5th :)

It's addictive..
If I'm not counting the light wash inbtwn, I have 9 layers of UPP on the car now. I guess that's as slick and as wet look as it can get. In fact it was so smooth, I could hardly put the first layer of Pinnacle Souverän Wax on top of that. By the 2nd layer of SW, carnauba wax is going on a lot easier.
Some say after the 4th or 5th layer or so, it won't be as effective. I just couldn't stop applying more layers. :P Now I can understand why people were feeling the car's surface during the show last weekend.
UPP is some sick stuff! :D

2 Thoughts ...
The reason the UPP was difficult to remove is because you probably applied it too thick. It is a little difficult to get the "thin" application down ... but honestly if you can see even a slight haze from the product on your car, you have enough on it.
I use less than 2 ounces to do my Pontiac SSEI (big car)
Thin applications will eliminate the build-up on your MF as well as the smears.
Personally I have found 3 coats to give the best bang for time involved ... After that I don't notice any difference.
Great Product!

Apply very thinly, like its invisible. You can do so with mist of water of your applicator. (Which makes me wonder, doesn't the solution get diluted?) Leave it on for 1 hour. Its the best amount. I removed 1 layer 35 mins later and it was sort of a pain to buff off.

I think 3 is the hitting point, but I haven't tried anything more. Probably more for the wintertime :bigups

Hey Ben,

The directons for applying UPP, straight from the horses mouth!

Use very thin coats to apply Four Star Ultimate Paint Protection and never moisten your applicator. This high quality polymer product is super-concentrated and needs to be applied to a clean, dry surface with a dry applicator and applied in thin coats. Keep in mind that a little goes a long way. Let product adhere to paint and cross-link for 30 to 45 minutes before removing excess. Applying TOO MUCH product may increase the polymer's drying time. Four Star Ultimate Paint Protection requires an "aerobic cure" or "exposure to air" to fully dry unlike products which are high in petroleum distillates which are much faster drying but tend to dry out your skin and also your paint. Four Star Ultimate Paint Protection's low percentage of refined mineral spirits in a water-based formula means it's safe for you and safe for your paint. Remove excess with high quality MICROFIBER detailing towels. Additional layers of Four Star UPP (Ultimate Paint Protection) may be added every 24 hours.

Enjoy!

I wonder if Dwayne can chime in. Is it okay if the applicator a tiny bit damp? I find it very hard to apply with a dry pad.

9 layers! Now that's a lot of UPP. I may go the 4-5 route. Last time I put down 7 or so layers of Zaino, I had the hardest time deciding when to strip it to try another product because of the time investment.

If the applicator is damp with UPP then it is fine. Don't use it damp with water. I start out with a dry and clean applicator and go from there. The pad is going to get "wet" from the UPP no matter what. The point is not to dilute the product with water.

From reading the posts, I think I didn't wait long enough for the cross linking (like I actually know what that means). I also gotta try applying it thinner. I used a Surbuf MicroFinger pad on my PC to apply UPP because that allows me to get it on thin, but perhaps I need to work it more and in larger areas.
