Perhaps someone (Todd?) can comment on how sealants and carnauba based waxes actually bond to car surfaces (whether to bare paint or to a polymer based glaze/pre-cleaner.)
My take on it is there is both a mechanical (adhesive) bond and a chemical (polymer crosslinking) bond at work. Both are in play for waxes and sealants to some degree.
Waxes usually contain some polymer fraction, but the mechanical bond dominates. Sealants also adhere to the surface, but also crosslink
(vertically to any underlying polymers and horizontally) to form a protective shield. Sealants are more durable due to this chemical bonding.
Todd has mentioned that you can apply a sealant over a wax (at least with BF), but the durability of the sealant will be compromised, but the look will not. I've tried it (BFWD applied on cured MS) and saw no detriment.
The sealant will remove some of the wax and crosslink with the wax polymers plus stick to the wax to some degree. As you apply more layers of sealant, wax is removed and you end up with pure sealant.
Is this why spray polymer products (like BFPS) can be used on carnauba?
Comments appreciated...I may be incorrect here.
