Let's see, I started helping my Dad wash the Ford Country Squire Station wagon with fake wood paneling when I was 14...I even helped put Armor All on the dash. I am 41 now, so that works out to...carry the 1, multiply by the exponent and square the total...uh...27 years!

How to answer this? As a younger (20s and early 30s), single guy. I had time to wash, wax, apply Armour-All  (before I knew better). Then can came the wife and a couple kids. There goes the free time. Now, the kids are older (6 and 8) plus I've got a new car and found Autopia. So, I count a little for my previous attempts.

Well, since I got my first new car in the spring of 1971. That makes 32 years. I have always thought that detailing is normal maintainence of a vehicle. Like changing the oil on schedule, checking tire pressures, etc. :nixweiss :xyxthumbs :wavey

Started helping my Dad around 10-12 years old. Bought my first car at 14. It was a 1936 Buick. I fall into the 5+ category.;)

Let's see, its 10 am here, that's 3hours today. Plus the 8 yesterday,I'd say 11 hours all together.

Yep, very true. You are as good as hooked now!

Lets see....first car at 16...although rusty as hell, I still be out there detailing 'er with Turtle Wax and whatever else I could get for under $3!!

I am 25 now, so almost 10 years.

Speaking of rusty, I think there is snow in the forcast (which, for you people that don't even know what snow IS) and that equals salt, sand and YUCK! I have to get my winterize-on! GOTTA GO...later!

Let me think, I started to detail my parent's cars when I was 13. I got my firtst car when I was 16, and now I am 39. That makes 26 years of shining cars and I still love it!

Cheers,

I started when I was 14 with my then friend now brother in law to make some extra money and now I'm 32.

I remember we used meguiar's #3 pro fine cut cleaner with a sears orbital then topped with mothers pure carnuba wax and armor all, all over anything that even looked like rubber or vinyl.....

:)

Hmmm. I guess I started obsessing about detailing when I took my Impala in to a local "detailer". It looked great at delivery, but less then a week later, covered in what I now know are rotary buffer swirls. Took it back to him to fix, and less then a week later, buffer swirls. I decided to learn how to do it myself.

A year later, I found my new home - Autopia! I no longer have the Impala (totaled in an accident), but I got to start over clean with my Regal. I've never looked back, and my car has never been cleaner. :D

I shocked my parents, when, at age 11, I took an interest in detailing the family cruisers.

Started with Dawn soap and Rain Dance, graduated to Eagle One and now have darn near 100 different wax products sitting in test bins...plus all of the polishes, cleaners, tire junk, etc.

30-11 = 19 years? Although, I don't count the first few, as I didn't know that you shouldn't wax the plastic trim pieces....so, let's call it 15 or so.

I voted : less than a year:

I will be a year on Autopia comes November 11, starting from that date I began real detailing.

The 21 years before that I was just keeping my cars clean :D

I've been taking care of my cars since my first vehicle waaaaaaaay back in 75. But for serious detailing....that just started since I got my Mystic Blue 91 Stealth R/T about 6 months ago. I'm a roooooookie! I've found that detailing my cars is allot of work, but it's also allot of fun. When I park my car somewhere, and I can see it sparkling, it's well worth all the work involved! Most people think it's a new car! Now everyone at work comes to me about problems with the appearance of their cars. Detailing cars is allot more fun than networking! :xyxthumbs

oh so many years ago.

Funny enough my penchant for keeping vehicles clean began with our family boat. Went to the lake every Saturday during the summer, and before we put it away, it would get washed inside and out, including the trailer. The car(s) that towed the boat(s) saw their fair share of attention too.

When I got my first car in 1970 a 1963 Ford Falcon Futura coupe, white w/black "vinyl" top, 3 speed on the column, and bucket seats. I tried to wash and wax the paint off. It rarely had an opportunity to get dirty.

Of course product improvements and a continual learning curve has brought a new meaning to "detailing".

I'll go along with cvcaelen (what does that mean?) and say I've been keeping 'em clean for 32+ years, but "detailing" for the last two.
