How I made my own backing plate from the stock PC Pad

Hello to all,

I have been reading a lot in these forums for quite some time. I recently bought:

* A PC 7424 from Amazon

* ZAIO, ZPC, Z2, Z5 from Zaino

* Sonus Claybars from Autopia Car Care

* Detailing towels from Autopia Car Care

* 3.5" backing plate and 5" pads (1 Yellow, 2 Orange, 2 White, 1 Black) from Danase

So the problem is I did not receive my backing plate from Danase in time to be sent to Nicaragua (where I live), he was out of stock, so I was thinking that I could make my own backing plate from the stock 7424 pad. Here is what I did:

This is the original PC Pad we all know:

I used a small Victorinox knife to separate the backing plate and pad:

Here is the backing plate alone, I used a Dremel Rotary tool (my favorite tool as of now) to remove the glue from the baking plate:

I measured the backing plate against my pads, the size is OK I guess:

Then I went to the hardware store and bought some adhesive velcro and applied it to the backing plate and original pad:

It works great and it works with the Danase pads too:

I am now ready to begin :buffing:

Very creative to say the least (and desperate). Im sure you can get by for some time with that ingenuity! I think after you have used a flexible BP, you'll be happy you did.

"A" for creativity though!

This set-up does work. I did the same thing with a Turtle Wax hand buffer. :grinno: I removed the foam pad, completely removed all remnants of old glue and then glued velcro to the backing plate. 6.5 inch LC pads fit perfectly and it does an excellent job of polishing and waxing. Couldn't see spending money on a PC as I don't detail for a living. Plus, I'm nostalgic and like the fact that I still have a useful product with the name TurtleWax in my arsenal. :chuckle:

It does work indeed, today I detailed the hood and trunk lid of my car with ZPC and LC Orange pads to try my backing plate. The hood has never shined like it does now. :2thumbs: :buffing:

you could do the same thing with the flexible sanding plate you got with the PC and it would be better

Yep, did that about a year ago with my backing plate. Went to home depot and got some velcro and cut it to size and applied. Also had some pads that weren't sticking to well so I put some self adhesive velcro on them and they stick great now.
