How fix damage done by TW Bug and Tar remove?

I'm pissed and maybe I don't need to be, so one of you people may be able to help me here.

I think I permanently messed up the plastic on one of my side mirrors. It's black plastic, I don't know if it's painted or not.

I saw the threads about how wonderful the yellow can Turtle Wax tar and bug remover is so went and got some. Other than it leaving a gooey, petrolium smelling reminant which cleans up fairly easily, it works pretty ok on bugs. 1z bug remover works better, I must say, and doesn't mess up your wax job either.

But I used some of this stuff on one of my mirrors and now it's very dull, almost cloudy compared to the other one. I can shine it up a bit by putting wax on it but it's natural state, compared to that of the other (untreated by TW) mirror is very dull or cloudy looking.

What can I do to fix this? Is the product "forever black" for something like this? I think I messed up that mirror for good...

Try peanut butter or a white erasor. I think some guy on here tried using EO AZ2 (sp?) because peanut butter and the white erasor didnt work. He tried the EO AZ2 and said the plastic trim looked showroom finish again without using oils and silicones to hide away the dullness.

Craig,

I had the exact same problem with my car and when I saw your question/dilemma I just had to respond. My 57 Jaguar XK140’s paint job was so bad that when I used a bug & tar remover my paint turned milky white. That would not due on a red car. I used a product called Acrylic-Wërks to solve the problem. Go to over to the Acrylic Werks Test Car #2 post which you can find on the home page to see some interesting threads and results. I can personally guarantee that Acrylic- Wërks will solve this and many other challenges you will face in the future. Oh, Here is an example of how the product works on mirror casings. Go to Insturction #8 on Acrylic-Werks website and check it out for yourself.

Feel free to call on me at any time. And oh by the way Craig, eat the peanut butter.

Good luck,

Bruce……

Id go with the forever black....Its an actual dye....Black again will tend to wash out after 2-3 washes.....

Maybe you could try some Novus? I've used Novus #2 to get cloudiness out of the clear plastic on the instrument cluster (caused my some product that my wife used to clean the gauges, don't remember what it was, but it wasn't safe for clear plastic). Not sure if it would work on the black plastic of your mirror, but if you have some, it's worth a try.

I hate to admit to this, but I use Meg's Deep Crystal paint cleaner on the mirrors and rear plastic panels on my Blazer and they look GREAT!! 303 on all the other vinyl, though.....

Just one of those "I wonder...." things that happened to work out.
