ive used carb cleaner or a dab of paint thinner on a rag......take care with the finish if theyre painted, should be okay with a quick wipe though

Carb cleaner is extrememly agressive and can ruin many finishes. Stay away from it except for it's intended uses. I would suggest mineral spirits or that won't work or not available I would try some Coleman lantern fuel if you have it. This is commonly referred to as rubber solvent and used in many adhesive removers.

I have painted rims (Acura TL '06). I used Mineral Spirits. It doesn't dissolve the adhesive. I used the Mineral Spirits to soak the adhesive tape as I scrapped the tape with my fingernail. The tape will come off in small sticky balls. When you have removed the tape material and actually reach the ahesive itself, then the Mineral Spirits will wipe-off the last part of ahesive from the rim. This was successful for me, with no scratches to the rim's finish.

When i took off my weight stickers i used my thumb and finger to rub off most of the stickiness and then used some scratch removed to take the rest off.

prior to getting my car, someone removed the weights with a screwdriver, leaving deep gouges in the nice racing hart rims. :( This is good to know though so i can get remnants off.

3M Adhesive Remover. Works like a charm for me every time. I let it dwell by soaking a rag/paper towel with it and finding a way to keep the saturated rag/towel on the spot in question.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover

Awesome stuff.

Use a rag and wipe some onto the adhesive, let it sit for ~10 seconds, then rub it off with the same rag. Works great. I use it for a lot of things, most recently for getting the wheel-weight tape residue off my BBS RG-R rims.
