How do you guys clean dirty, sticky, gungy steering wheels?

Diluted Simple Green is a good start for a product off the shelf. I have used it a few times with good results. You just have to be careful with the leather wrap on older cars so that you don't rub the color off. Once you have choosen a cleaner, do a small area to test the strenght of the cleaner before going on to the rest. I always go over the wheel with a wet rag to remove any cleaner residue before appying a leather conditioner when done. Some people may not due this step but its just me. I use Lexol for the final step.

Great question and I will be curious as to what the other pros use.

Easy to do. I clean 2-3 late model BMW's per week for resale.

1. You can use a mixture of APC diluted with water, or dishwashing liquid diluted with water (both around 10 parts water to 1 part product). I ususally fill a spray bottle with this solution as I also use it on the dash and door panels.

2. Use a quality boar's hair brush and scrub the wheel, center, switches, etc.

3. Wipe off excess with a terry towel AND use compressed air to blow dry switch areas.

Here's a pic of a 740i that I recently finished.

The result is a clean, oil-free steering wheel and dash area. Our shop does not add glossy sprays, etc.
