How Do You Detail/Polish Roofs?

Hi guys.

I'm short... 5'7''. Anyways, I'm wondering what you guys do to polish the roof of a car. Do you stand on a ladder, or a stool, or what? Like myself, I have trouble reaching the middle of the roof.

Also, when you are polishing the roof, can you still get halogen lighting to shine at the right angle to show swirls, etc?

I guess if you are short like me, you may not have to polish the roof because the swirls aren't as visible.

I use a little step ladder that is flat. I think Lowes just ran a black friday special on one of these.

My halogens can raise pretty high. Normally I set them on one side and polish from the other side. On hoods, trunks and roofs all you need is a little angle to see the light. You are actually looking at the reflection of the bulbs in the paint to see the swirls. So seeing the hologens at an angle is better since it is not so bright.

I have a Werner Platform like Accumulator. Only one though. I just move it around. Also makes for a nice table to stash things on as your working around the bottom of the car.

I have that aluminum platform from Lowes for $35 you have to make sure to lock the leggs or it will cave in. It is about 5 feet long, well worth it

For taller cars like S.U.V.'s you really need one or even two of these aluminum stands.

I have one of these scaffolds and the above folding aluminum step stool. If the vehicle is too tall, then I just suspend myself from a tree branch and buff away. :woohoo:

thanks for all the input guys. I'll keep an eye open for what to look for tomorrow when I go to lowes.

I would feel much safer on a platform than a ladder, so I could walk back and forth a little.
