How do you clean your BFMS applicator?

I'm thinking about grabbing a couple of these 500 Watt work lamps for the garage. Has anyone used them? I'm currently using a couple 120W hook shop lamps but I would welcome more wattage. Only thing I worry about is if 500W would be too tough on the eyes. I think they would make polishing out swirls easier though (easy to spot on the paint). Thoughts?

I've never used anything that bright but I've used that style lamp before. It makes working under your car sooooo much eaiser. The 500 watt lights would be really good for finding swirls. Probably hot as hell too, so you could probably get a tan while detailing at night or something. :D

IMHO the best halogen lights are the ones that come with tri-pod like stands, and can be height adjusted. They usually use dual 500 watt fixtures, so they're nice and bright.

I have 4 in the garage, plus I've started installing flourescent lights in the ceiling. The smaller ones like in your pic are nice, but don't work as well as the tri-pod ones do. (You're always shining the light "up" or having to hold it...not convenient)

I use two ( tripods 500w/ea) in my detailing garage. They are great for detailing engine and working underneath cars. They are great for exposing surface defects and can be quite discouraging when aimed at the right angle and emphasizing spiderwebbing. In terms of electric usage unless you are using them several hours each day there is no appreciable increase in monthly electric cost.

First weekend it's cloudy I'll run to the store and pick up one of these.

I'm going to feel kind of weird using one of them to wax my car, it's like "freak show, come this way and look at the nut". Oh well, I'll just have to answer the storm of questions from the people that walk by.

I got one like that. Dual 500watt. The only thing I don't like is that they get super hot!!!! Ouch!

Intel, that's the one that home depot has, I was thinking of that one. It doesn't look that tall or is it just the way it's adjusted in the photo? The Home Depot website doesn't list it's max height, do you know?

If you have a white finished garage then that is the ticket. I don't have a finished garage so I can't "bounce" the light off the ceiling and thus get cooked in the process.

Be carefull with these lights. I had a set of the short ones that sit on the floor. Had them actually burn a hole in a new carpet. The light did get turned over. But, they are hot.

I just bought one of those portable ones on the first pic today. I only had it set to 250 watt to work on interior and it was freaking hot! Those height adjustables ones would definitely be better as I was finding myself having to use a chair to place it a little higher but they were cheap:D about 30 CAD vs. 70+ for the height adjustables.

This one looks pretty cool too:

Can be used as telescoping tripod or portable worklight by removing sled base. $70 though, you think it's worth it?

I was thinking of buying these too for my garage.

One WARNING though:scared

A guy posted on the bimmer board that he knocked one of these with a cord or something and it came crashing down on his buddies car that he was detailing.

I would ensure the tripod version was secured with something to the wall as a precaution.

good point!

I bought a twin-head Halogen work lamp mounted on a telescoping tripod - got it at a Sam's Club closeout for nineteen bucks. Its two lamps are dual/switchable 300/500 watts. With this sucker you can see swirls that aren't yet in the paint.:D But the HEAT! Like Jngrbrdman says, you could get a tan.
