How do I get rubber off of the fenders?

I drag race my car on the weekends and it always leaves tons of melted rubber on the fenders, wheel wells and even as high as the roof.

I usually spend several hours cleaning with bug and tar remover but I would love to find an easier way.

Is there any other product out there that may make cleanup easier?

In preparation for my track days, I use up a small 4 ounce spritz bottle of Mothers Protectant 3 ounces + Mothers Back-to-Black 1 ounce to dress my wheel wells. It helps resist the rubber from sticking. Also, after I get home and let the brakes cool down, I give it my wheel wells a quick rinse to prevent the burnt rubber from further baking in.

On other my race car, the wells has 50% plastic and 50% painted areas. I do dress the plastic like the process above and spray a Spray Wax on the painted surfaces. I don't buff it off or spread it so it takes quite a bit of product to get full coverage.

The trouble of making this as effective is that you should start with clean surfaces first before dressing and spray waxing.

There are coatings that people use to keep that stuff from sticking. Check out Summit Racing to see what they offer.

Put a new coat of wax on before you head out, then use some WD40 to get rid of whatever was able to stick.

it's a pain to get it off no matter what you use... I don't have any suggestions to get it off. But going forward, I've found that Rain-X Bug and Tar Protective Shield applied before drag racing will make rubber removal a trivial exercise with water and sponge. It's available almost everywhere - Wal-Mart, etc.

I road race, so I get rubber all over my car. Mostly behind the wheels but the hood and roof get hit too. Find some Stoner's Tarminator at at auto parts store and it will come right off. Use it with a microfiber, it will clean better and it's easier on your paint.

If you can't find Tarminator then mineral spirits will work. In either case you will have to rewax the areas you cleaned.

Summit offers a product called Burnout Guard by Geddex.

I have some of it but it takes virtually a 1/2 bottle to coat all the areas.

That in and of itself isn't the problem but it is flammable and must be shipped by truck freight with a hazmat designation.

By the time I get it here in Canada a $8.00 bottle ends up costing me nearly $30.00 after customs and brokerage.

I'm at the track 2-3 times a week so it ends up costing me as much in product as it does to race.(slight exageration)

Thanks,

I'll try both those products.

I've used Stoener's glass cleaner and it works quite well so if I can find Tarminator I'll definitely try that too.

the trick is to lay down a thick layer of petroleum jelly BEFORE the burnout

Hm, a Ford with 500rwhp. What's it run? 13's  j/k ;)

It was 11.42 @ 119.92 at 10psi (460rwhp) on 4.10 gears. (Nov 03, 2006)

This is with a full roadrace suspension setup and 55lb. front wheels.

I was also breaking belt tensioners and having belt slip issues that day.

I have since designed and marketed my own tensioner.

Last season I went back to 3.55's because I thought that it would have a little more traction on the street but now I'm regretting it.

I will be back on 4.10's by next month when she comes out of hibernation.
