How aggresive should I be?

I have a brand new black sapphire "metallic black" BMW 325xi. My wife got home from work the other day with a 1" scratch down the side. It seems to be white paint where someone scraped it with their door. I can't feel it with my fingernail, but it won't just wipe off either. I'm new to detailing, basically all I know is what I've learned from this site. What should I do? Should I start with the least aggresive polish and work my way up until I remove the scratch? I plan on washing, claying and buying a PC. I've not decided on what products to use on the black metallic paint. I want that deep wet look that brings out the metallic in the paint. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Zanio seems interesting.

Thank You!

Yeep .. even Scratch-X might do it till ya get the rest of your arsenal set up

I've removed a *LOT* of paint-transfers like that. As long as it's THEIR paint on top of your Bimmer's paint, you've probably lucked out. Just take it off with gentle claying. Clay is THE answer for stuff like that; it's the gentle, NONabrasive answer, too. Just do it right so you don't mar the surface- problems with claying are almost always user-error.

Actually, I would recommend that you try your favorite wax first. You may be surprised to find out that is all that is really necessary.

Are you serious about wax removing a scratch or in this case paint transfer?

I have used things like Mothers Carnuba cleaner wax and removed paint transfer. I think its the mild abrasives and the cleaning solvents in it that does it. It won't touch the scratch. Takes a little elbow grease but be patient.

Try a claybar lubricated with car wash diluted 1 part car wash to 2 parts water. If that doesn't work then try the least abrasive polish you have. When it comes to abrasives always use the least possible to get the job done.

A cleaner wax I understand, but I have no need for a cleaner wax in my arsenal and would hardly consider it "my favorite wax." I just don't want him sitting there inducing scratches trying to get paint transfer with S100.

Hopefully it's just a paint transfer and not primer showing through. I plan on claying the entire car and hopefully in the process removing the scratch. After claying would IP,FP,AIO,SGX2 and PCW be a good choice for the metllic black?
