housebreaking a homeless dog!

There is no cure!
this christmas eve i picked up a stray poodle. she was covered in ticks, dirty, and had all sorts of things stuck to her un groomed curly white coat.

immediatley took her home and gave her some homemade dog food, water, a bath, and mediocre grooming. since then no-one has responded to my fliers so i proceeded to take her to the vet. got her de-wormed (she had tape worms in her stool), and fully vaccinated, and soon to be spayed.

she is now officially my dog.

i named her bailey and shes great. shes very sweet, affectionate, and pretty much like any lap dog.

only problem is housebreaking her.

i work monday-fri from 8:30 till 6pm. when i not home i simply have been keeping her in my patio. this has been alright for a little while but she ends up eating and biting our plants, pooping and peeing all over the patio tile. and on top of that, she gets really smelly form the humidity and gets really dirty quickly. she is only 9 pounds and an estimated 9 months, so shes not a giant poodle. shes very small and easily perceived as an indoor dog. but she just keeps peeing and pooping everywhere.

do you guys think it is a bad idea to have her locked in her crate for that time im gone? i dont know what to do. any advise, tips, suggestions.

 How funny i had a cute little dog come to my front door to beg for food 5 hours ago. . I gave him a Sausage biscuitt & he ate it. But I got pissed when the little rascal Pooped on my door step. :bb:

Which one of you guys live in Kendall? When I was a student at the U senior year I had an apartment in Kendall.

At nine months, it may be a bit young to keep in a cage for that long. Babies can't go very long and neither can puppies. Do you know anyone that can keep her for a time to get her house-broken and then you can take her back?

During the hours you are home, hang a bell from a string on the door handle, and everytime you go to take her out, when you get to the door, say "outside" and ring the bell. Eventually she will ring the bell when she wants to go outside. One caveate with this: they like to ring the bell everytime they want to go outside! I didn't say everytime they needed to go outside. :)

Go on amazon and get these books by the "Monks of New Skete":

-How to be your dog's best friend
-The art of training a puppy

Also, post this over at autop...Accumulator is very good with dogs.

Crates are great for dogs while you are gone. It does help to crate train them earlier. We get our pooch (and number one employee) in a crate during the day for a while. Then, he outgrew his crate. :online2lo

I had to get used to the idea that crates aren't cages nor are they cruel. Typically, dogs won't go to teh bathroom in the crate if they consider it their home. I would suggest getting a book on crate training and taking it from there.

Scott i too hated the thought of a crate but eventually we had too. your right the dog will not make a mess where it sleeps.I was told that puppies have weak kidneys and over time the crate will help the pup hold it a little longer each time building up the kidney.8 hrs may be a little too long to go without a personel break.

joyride You might need someone to let the dog outside a couple X during the evening hrs to do its duties,be sure to give her a treat afterwords.
