Horrible Detail Day (Long Post..)

I thought i would share with you my bad detail day and hopefully get some wise advice just incase i have another sticky situation...I spent all day on a full detail of a 97 GMC Sierra..hard waterspots, swirls never been detailed in its life..and after i finish im taking off all the masking tape from the trim and apparently one of the black plastic mirrors had been spray painted so i tore a tape lines worth of paint off the mirror..in panic mode I go over to the NAPA store and found a mirror exactly like it..The customer stops by right when im getting ready to put the mirror on so i had to show them what happened, they seemed understanding But..i thought it was solved until i realized that in my frustration i had just bought a non power mirror..so i had to take it back and leave them a note to call me..they did this morning and assured me it was OK but I told them i would call a body shop and have them touch it up and offered a free wash and wax..

What would you have done differently? Would you even have taped off a black plastic mirror (it was just the edge for the purpose of not marring it with my buffer when i went up the door)

An unrelated question also..I checked around on here about buffing over pinstriping with a PC and it seemed like it should be ok but some spots on there the pinstriping came out considerably faded after DACP step..was i pressing to hard or what?

Sorry for Venting..thanks for your time..and also to all the Old schoolers that have helped me start my business from what i learned in my lurking..

Its part of the learning process my friend. Don't panic and make good decisions.

Are you using blue painters tape when masking? If not then start using it . You can tape over the pinstriping if you're buffing with an abrasive. I think you went way over the top to fix the situation. Sounds like you are sincere and want to have the best customer service. Way to go !!

But remember this vehicle has never been detailed and it was probably trashed from the car wash and owners as well. So , how do you know that the mirrors weren't crap to begin with , or the repaint was terrible.

You brought the vehicle up to par . BUt they 're going to have to take some responsibility for all the years of neglect. Yeah you want to mAKE IT RIGHT but man sometimes you can't detail it perfectly without bringing out excisting flaws...

Good luck

Hi I think you handled the situation very well .
As for taping the mirror up this car sounds like a junker as said above me the owner has to take some responsability on board for the general neglect but I like you dont like to give the costomer any thing to complain about and im sure you have exeeded your customers expectations which is what its all about the Details.
Keep up the good work.
Jay :goodluck: :goodluck:

it sounds like it you handled it well. in the future if the mirror is smooth i wouldn't bother taping it off. if it is textured it is good to tape because cleaning excess residue from a textured part is a pain in the a$$. don't sweat it too much, bad days are bound to happen, no matter how long you have been at it. good luck.
