Hook & Loop Back Plate...Need Help

CleanFreak

- Hey, U Missed A Spot -
I just purchased a 7424 Porter Cable polisher and need to find were I can get a 6" hook and loop back plate in Onatrio Canada?

Any help would be great....

Thanks..

Canadian Tire sells them. You can always find them at your local auto body and paint supply shop.

Since you have a 7424 (I assume, with the factory 5" counterweight) I would buy a lighter backing plate like a 5" diameter one or preferably the Meguiar's 5" plate. A 6" backing plate with a 5" weight would probably vibrate horribly, especially once you actually put a pad onto it.

Check my thread below for some info and the thread type of the pad you'll need.

Any wodworking store that carries Porter Cable should carry them. I bought mine at the local contractors supply store. I do not think there is a better one than the Porter Cable one.

Why do alot of websites offer the 6" back plate when some of the 7424 polishers came with the 5 counterweight?

Cmax sells the 3M version. I can get you the Meguiars W64DA at a decent price if you would like and have it shipped. As I am at it, I can get you the 6" Counterweight for a couple of bucks as well. I need to pick up some materials so getting the stuff for you isn't a problem.

Don't bother ordering from the states for something that is available in Canada as the shipping and duties will make it much more expensive >90% of the time.

Who knows? :nixweiss Such a setup would balance horribly, which is why there are tons of archived posts about people struggling to get 6" counterweights for their 7424 to match their CMA pad kits.

I think the "best" setup is likely to be the 6" weight with the Meguiar's plate Paco mentioned, since it's one of the lightest. Though I haven't tried this particular setup myself (yet), I'd like to sometime.

Paco,

I'm really not that far from you (Hamilton)...Where can I get them ?...How much to ship to here?...

I believe there is a UAP/NAPA store on Upper Ottawa and Hwy 53. There are a few autobody supply stores around that area as well.

Freak:

Couple of options for you:

Homedepot (Meadowlands) has a 6" psa pad for 9.00.

Saw a 6" velcro pad at the Ancaster swap meet last month for 25.00. There is another meet a week from Sunday.

I picked up a 5" velcro pad at the Hamilton Wood Show back in January for 10.00.I have the phone # for the vendor if you want to call them.

BTW, I'm over by Upper Gage.

Thanks for all the help....I tried UAP/NAPA and they had nothing....But, I did find a 5" generic brand at Dura Chemicals for $21.00....They had the Meg's W64DA for $32.00....I'll see how long this will last and next time I'll pick up the Meg's brand....

Bill M,

You work off Upper Gage or live?

Live just south of the Linc.

Did Dura Chemicals have a complete line of Meguiar's products? I haven't been in there for a while, just wondering if they have the pads. I'm also looking for #20.

I personally own the 3M after having a horrible experience with the Meguiars one (didn't last 2 days for me).

The 3M sticks to pads like glue. I almost too much of a good thing. Getting the pads off is difficult :up

Considering my meguiars had pads flinging off after just 4 hours of use. I'll stick to the slightly more expensive 3M Hook it.

The Meguiars size is definitely nice though. The 3M one has a bigger radius. I must admit that the small Meguiars made me feel a lot more comfortable. I am now super careful to be careful as the pads outer edge is very close to the edge of the backing plate.

But... with that said. I seem to have a lot less vibration now than I did with the Meguiars one. I think the added weight of the 3M dampened the vibration.

Current setup is a 6" 3M Hook It (make sure you don't get the Hook It II as it has the reverse velcro) with a 6" counterweight and Meguiars 6.5" pads. Very nice to work with. :up :up :up

If you don't like one you bought and would like to give the W64DA a try, let me know.
