Honda paint - question about new 2008

There is a chance, my family may purchase a Honda Pilot in the near future. I've never detailed a Honda and I need advice from all ya'll Honda experts. How does it compare to Toyota? Are there any "must know" tips that you need to get and maintain a nice finish? Any products too avoid? and if so, - why? Thanks!

My wife had a 97 Honda and as i remember the paint wasn't hard at all. The only problem i ran in to was the CC was very thin. It was very easy to marr the finish and to put swirls too. The Honda's of today i don't know about them, someone will jump in soon to let you know for sure.

I have found that you can no longer generalize the hardness of Honda paint. I see a Odyssey every other week that has very little to no marring after 9 months. My Integra can barely make it 9 weeks. A two year old TL that I see once yearly (past two years) and it has little marring and has never been polished. My neighbor has a new Civic coupe and it's swirled to hell and back.

I have an '02 Civic and I believe the paint is on the soft side as I was easily able to take all the swirls I had out of the paint with my UDM. However, I have washed it about 5 times since then, basic two bucket wash and being very careful not to scrub and I have noticed now new marring at all. I have never polished any other paint so I can't say how it compares.

One tip, as with any paint, make sure you keep it protected, I bought mine used and the last owner must not have taken care of it. I already have isolated areas of cc failure. I think most are a result of bird/bug/water etchings.

I have a 06 Accord and the paint is indeed soft and feels/seems kinda thin too.

The clear coat isn't too bad. Don't really have any problems with marring or swirling, but then again I'm very careful (anal?) when I wash my car.

We looked at an 08 Accord where they had just taken the protective plastic off - whoever washed it - swirled it to hell! I'd charge at least 75 bucks to polish it out and seal it. But, it was only one car, the rest in on the lot looked ok.

We have a 2007 Odyssey. It is about a year old. My wife has taken it through the scrubber auto car washes about 4 times (last winter). Otherwise, I wash it the correct way. Other than dings and whatnot due to having 3 kids and my wife's horrible driving :chuckle: , the paint itself has held up remarkably well. Even looking closely, I see very little to no noticeable marring. I haven't had to polish it, so I don't know how correctable it is.

I heard Honda paint in general is very thin. I know on the new 8th gen civics they only put 1 thin coat of clear coat so they chip very easily.

:grinno: We have a 2006 Honda odyssey and it does seem to have soft paint. I parked under a tree and the branches scratched up the roof. I will probably wait until the winter prep to polish those scratch out. Other than that the Honda has been the best possible way to haul around my family. I had a Volvo S70 awd sedan before the Honda and until Volvo ever makes a minivan, the Honda is the benchmark.

an oldish post i know/ but

my integra paint is so soft. i had to get the bonnet resprayed by honda as the primer was starting to show.

scratches and hazing so easily.

my friend has an 07 odyssey, same problem but only on the left side of the car. my wife's hobbio - small van like people carrier - has paint like rock. best finish ive seen, tough as nails and always look good - even when its dirty. the car cost a 1/3 the price of mine.

Update, my wife traded her Toyota van for a 07 Honda van and 5 weeks later I traded my Rav4 for a 08 Accord. I've put a couple layers of sealants on the van and a layer of Collinite 845, the Accord needed some HiTemp AIO followed by a layer of banana wax. So far so good!
