Holograming with Souveran??

So what went wrong? After some spots of LCOrange/SIP & LCWhite/106FF I took car outside in sunlight to make sure I didn't have any buffer trails. None to be found. Went back in & applied souveran to a red LC pad on entire car, buffed off with elite ultra plush microfiber. Looked awesome under shop lights and halogens, left and phoned customer that car was done.

Next day he took it outside and immediately sent me a text saying that there were buffer trails all over the car!! I thought he was kidding because I didn't see any before applying wax, and I know the wax couldn't have done it. After a few more text messages he wasn't kidding. Drove to meet him at the shop, sure enough parked out in the sun there appeared to be holograming all over the car.

I took the car from him and stripped the wax off with multiple wipedowns of 50/50. Took car back outside, all holograming was gone. Applied Clearkote Carnuaba Moose wax and called it a night.

So has this ever happened to anyone else and if so what caused the holograming effect? Did I overwork the souveran? If I remember right the rotary was set on 600ish and I kept the pad from drying. Makes me want to apply wax with the PC just to be safe!

It's an oily wax. Sometimes, if your towels aren't perfectly clean or you don't wipe hard enough or the sun hits it or you applied too much (lol this has happened to me more than once), it'll leave what looks like terrible holograms. Usually a fresh pair of towels and a QD wipedown will fix it, if it's worse try washing.

I get this problem most often when I use Zymol. Much less often I see it with Souveran or Swissvax.

They look like holograms, but they're really more of a smear. Sometimes QD and a clean towel will fix the problem.

Yeah, they don't look as bad as holograming but close to it, random smearing really (but looks a lot like holograming)...either way it looked horrible on a black Corvette!

So do you guys apply Souvy by hand, rotary, or PC? I did notice that the wax was very oily but I only wiped over the pad 1 or twice until covered before applying.

Oh and I did give it a wash before IPA. It was very dusty from him driving, acutally got me looking for a good anti static QD...

I removed the wax with 2 new elite plush MFers (flipping often) so I think that I had an excess of souveran on the pad or just "overworked" it with the rotary.

Just thought I'd see if anyone else had a similar experience with Souveran and at the same time pass on to others of how not to apply!

don't you think waxing with a rotary is a bit over kill?

Overkill? Is there such a thing? :lol Na, I saw it as an efficient application vehicle ;) Since I had the rotary out, I just grabbed a red pad and turned down the speed. Also I didn't see much difference applying it with the Makita over the PC. (Well there is a difference but you know what I mean)

Apply it by hand. On some paints, the rotary will drive the wax uneven into the paint and will not come off. Day 2, it will outgas and cause smears and/or holograms/trails.

Certain AIO's can not be used with the rotary.

IIRC, applying wax via rotary will lead to holograms. They're not actual holograms, of course, but they look just like them. Only apply a wax via PC.

Lesson learned, I'll either just do it by hand or break out the PC.

:beers

I heard from Bence that Scholl people applied their wax with the rotary and an ORANGE pad at like 2500rpm at a demostration????:buffing: :buffing: :buffing:

I have heard stories of dealer mixing their compound with wax, kinda sounds similar to what you depicted.
