Hmmm..Prestone QS = OCW?

Today I go into Pepboys to look around and I go check out the clearance table as I am wont to. A checkout girl comes by and remarks that the clearance price marked will ring up at 50% at the checkout register. They had the huge (18 in) California Water Blade with the handle attachment for tall roofs at $14.30 ( $7.15 at checkout). I grab that and continue looking at the rest of the mostly useless junk. My eye was caught by 2 bottles of Prestone Quick Shine marked at $2.90 ($1.45 at Checkout). Cheap, but that's not what got my attention. The bottles are the same as the OCW bottles except they had a better quality sprayhead. They had been sitting there long enough for the product to separate into the same proportions as OCW. I shake it up. It looks exactly like OCW. I spray some out and there is that very familiar OCW scent. The label contains language as "high gloss carnauba formula", "no other instant detailer lasts longer!", "contains both gloss enhancers for shine and carnauba wax for durability", "just spray on and wipe off". Admittedly those blurbs could apply to many different products but methinks that is too many coincidences.

I just went out and cleared a section of OCW on my vehicle with some strong Dawn solution and applied the Quick Shine. Looks exactly the same.

I'm convinced that they are one in the same. If so, it begs the question, who rebranded whom?

For $1.45 a bottle I hope some OCW users pickup a bottle and report back.

Interesting discovery. I just looked up QS on Prestone's website but couldn't find it. Maybe you can ask David to shed some light on those "coincidences". I know if I had a closer Pep Boys i'd pick some up, $1.45 is an awesome deal, whether or not its relabeled OCW.

I can't find any referance to it except they had Prestone wax w/free quick shine at PepBoys awhile back for like $5

do a durability test just to be sure but if you are right then some of you guys are getting shafted buying high end enthuiast products

I wouldn't say anyone was shafted and I didn't mean to imply that they were. I use OCW and I love it. At $13-16 a bottle I think OCW is a great bargain considering how quick it is to do an entire vehicle, how little you need to use and the beautiful wet shine you get.

That being said, I thought it was great that I could pick up what I think is rebadged OCW for $1.45 a bottle. They only had two bottles left and I grabbed them both! I was wanting to point out what I thought to be a great bargain to others (if in fact it is what I suspect) and get feedback if someone with OCW experience confirms my suspicions.

Hey Markthom,

Can you snap some pics of that Preston quick shine thing"? I want to see how it looks like. Thanks.

I'd be interested in seeing what these bottles look like (esp the label). Prestone products across the line use Black and Yellow.

So when you say the "bottles" are the same do you mean the same type of bottle was used for both products or are both bottles packaged and labeled the same execept for the name obviously?

Clearance items at a store have usually been around awhile. I Googled for it and came up blank as well.

I brought OCW by the gallon jug (clear) and it says "SunX" (red label with black/yellow and white writing) on it. Not the same as what they have on the website and I get my Optimum products straight from them.

As I understand it SunX has been around for awhile (read longer than OCP/W), though I do not know if it was made by Dave over at Optimum while marketed under that name.

Interesting, one product packaged at least two maybe three different ways. I like the stuff though no matter who makes it, but would rather have the real McCoy than something manufacturered under license.

So will the Real Optimum Car Wax please stand up.

well either I can't type or your Googling skills are vastly superior to mine :)

Anywho that don't look like neither of the bottles of OCW I've seen. Alot of products seperate when sitting around and many have the same base ingredients as well.

Now that I think about it I may have seen that at the local Pep Boys.

SunX is the same stuff.

I believe that SunX was made for pro detailers, and to enter the consumer market, they needed a new name for the marketing audience.

I think the dudes that made the stuff were suprised at how well it turned out, so they went more public with it, but what do i know :LOLOL

K so are the folks who made Sunx one in the same as the ones who make OCW now?

I dont know if David is the owner of SunX or not, or if he bought liscense rights or whatever....

Be careful what you want to know :rofl

SunX?

I did a Google on it and I got THIS :nervous:

Now, isnt Hueychemical.com its part of Chemicalguy or Warrenchemicl?

You would be suprised on how many other products are rebadged. If you contact Chemical Guys or Warner Chem. you could get a full line of detailing products with your own name on the bottle . They will also add something to the formula or take something away. They will also change the scent. You can buy seperate chemicals and blend them yourself. Im sure there are other chemicals companys that will do the same thing.
