Hide a Key

I have no idea how this thread might go, or how some people might feel in regards to releasing such information, but if you have a good idea but do not want to discuss it openly, please PM me.

Recently I have been locked out of my house. Family away, cellphone inside, and neighbors think I'm weird, I had to walk to a local gas station and make a collect call to my GF who has a copy of my CAR key. From there I went to class, and just went back home when I knew someone would be there...

I kept thinking how dumb I am for not have hidden a key somewhere in the backyard. Only issue is I cannot think of anyspot.... Well maybe I do, but wanted to know if you guys knew of any good spots to hide a spare key.

BTW, my neighbors don't neccesarily think I'm weird, although they might wonder with all the detailing, I just do not personally know them.

Does your garage door have the key pad option? That's how I get in my parents house.

Nah! I was planning on one of those Hide a Key boxes that sticks to metal surfaces. Wanted to put it under my car, near the frame.

My sister has a hide-a-key... I don't trust it, too easy to reach under and feel for one. Personally, I took a drill and drilled a hole into one of my keys, then pulled the license plates and put one of the plate screws through it. There is no outward sign that its there, and all I need to get it out is a screwdriver.

I keep a house key in my car. My car is equipped with OnStar so if I don't have my car key to get my house key, I call OnStar and they unlock the car for me.

One of my neighbors has a spare house key sewn in between the layers of his dog's collar (outdoor dog).

I hide mine in a nearby bird's nest, other than bird poo, it's a trick spot to hide a key.

Ever watch Seinfeld? That reminded me of the time Kramer hid a key in the neighbors bird cage and the bird ate it and died. LOL

The best! I do it also, and has saved me a lot of time and stress!:idea

You know, I have a spot for a key and don't have one in there. LOL We switched all of your locks a few months back and I guess I never did that.

The only down side to that is if you ever loose your wallet or it is stolen the person who finds it not only knows where you live but they now have a key to your house.

Ok, that reminds me of a story about someone where I used to work, who was frequently late, and I guess not wanting to use the same excuse too many times, told the supervisor that he was late because the dog ate his car keys, and before the supervisor could even ask, he added "BOTH SETS!".

But seriously, those are some great ideas...er....except for the bird nest one...

Some "typical" places I've heard about: Under garden gnomes, in the dog house, under the picnic table/patio set boards, inside those fake rocks/thermometers/etc., in the pond (in a waterproof container), and in the light fixture (if you have one with a non-visible bottom).

<taking notes on where to look for everyone's keys> ;)

Once upon a time I took a spare key for my car, crawled under my car and found a spot to duct tape it where I could feel it but not really see it. I never needed it, but it gave me peace of mind. Most of the time since then I've been married and knowing that my wife had a set, I haven't bothered.

Aww, come on Setec, you know you have a spare in your local Cardinal's nest. :rofl

I had a hide a key on my old truck. It was easy to get to, and trust me no one but me would have EVER found it. When I sold the truck I realized about a month afterwards that I never told the new owner about the hide a key. Now to find my old truck and drive away!

it strikes me as kind of funny that you need ideas on where to hide a key:nixweiss

But hey that's just me:bolt
