Hi all:
I found this site while searching for techniques of what to do after filling chip on my motorcycle gas tank with Primer, two or three coats of color and 2 coats of clearcoat. Hoping to learn how to smooth out, polish and buff this so the repair isn't noticeable. Paint is a beautiful metallic with background Royal Blue and specks of bright Cerulean Blue (my choice of color names) with lots of depth in the sunshine like there's a jillion coats of clearcoat. I used PENS for all coats and now need to kno if I need to sandpaper or what. I have one pack of 1500 grit. I hope I'm not in the wrong place since it seems mostly about car detailing, lol. If I'm incorrect in joining forums here, just blame it on my user ID cause I'm definitely silly and blame that on my age (72).

Welcome to DC, if you have any pictures of your problem they might be helpful. There are some great minds on this site and paint correction/chip repair isn't a stretch by any means.

OK, thanks. I have to wait 3 or 4 more days after the final clearcoat before I can sand, cut polish or whatever it is I should do next. So between now and then I'll try and get a macro shot of where I am at fixing it so far. There is a very small bit of clearcoat that is out of the bounds of the repaired area, but not much, so the dullness around the area I worked on is because of that when I send the pic. I figure if I cut through that to the original clearcoat it might work itself out, but that's only my sillywilly logic at work because I have never attempted painting anything before; not wood, plastic, metal or anything. I don't know what kind of paint cars usually use but mine is a metallic laquer paint job with lots of clearcoat on top.

Welcome to DC! You might want to try posting this in the "All About Paint Care" forum. You will probably get a few more responses that way. I'm sure that you will find the members here very helpful. I hope you enjoy your stay.

Thanks for the Welcome and advice. I took many pictures today (all bad) with my Fuji S7000 in bright sunlight. It all got washed out. Maybe some peeps here can give me an idea of the settings for this 8.3 Digital Camera. I took it on Auto with Macro ON, ISO 400. I will look at them in Photoshop and see if I can get them good enough to examine, but knowing correct settings for this type pic would help a lot.

.

I finally got a picture. It has been edited in Photoshop for brightness only plus cropping and changing size of file. The defect area should be obvious. The dark blue show the sides of the chip defect. The size was about 3 to 4 mm wide and almost 2-3/4 inch long. The depth was all the way to the metal. I used 3 pens from Color-Rite: Primer, Color, and Clearcoat. I want to know if I should now sand (wet/dry), cut-polish, or what.

The color is still too bright as the sun was very fierce and I'm sure I don't have the best camera settings on my Fuji S7000.

Just saw pic and it's not correct color. Maybe opening in Photoshop will show correctly.

EDITING 9/26 to add photo with more correct color or my M50. Defect is circled. You can open in editing program and magnify that section to see what I'm talking about:
