Helping a Buddy Correct his Black Accord

Ok I think I did it, while waiting for all my MF and Zaino to come in I just had to drive my car. Well here is my situation I have a 1995 Gti VR6 in Flash Red I just had a nice paint job (same color) done over the new year. I hit up this Message fourm and learned a lot which really saved my ride BUT I think I messed up. I could not hold out any longer I took the car out on a little road trip ended up staying the night out ooooohhhhhhh boy that's when it all went down the next day was a $h!ty rainy day, I had to drive home in this crap with sand/salt/dirt mix kicking up all over my NEW PAINT! Well now a week later I have all my Detail products and a sun baked dirty car...

I saw the topic on the dust covered BMW but this is WAY different.

Is it all over???

Also one more question on this first wash and Zaino should I hit it with the ole Clay Bar? I thought the Clay may remove some of the trash that is caught in the clear.

Thanks:bow

don't worry. Your car will be fine. Just wash it carefully (have you read up on wash techniques here yet? ;) ) and dry it carefully (have you read up on drying techniques here yet? :) ) - then feel it. If it is smooth as a baby's butt you don't need to clay - and you probably won't. But if you feel any tiny "dots" - get real, real close and look at one. You will probably be able to remove it with a little fingernail pressure. If you have more of these, THAT is what clay will get off for you (and only that - for example if you got water spots from this, clay won't help.) (have you read up on water spots here yet? :D )

Then go ahead and wax it.

First off, get the e-book. It will tell you a lot of stuf that you need to know.

ewww baked on dirt and salt!

Can you get a pressure washer or something? Baked on dirt is something you want to was away before you touch the car.

Yes I am all over that search and I have done my homework some what, I have read all the topics you listed I will have to check the water spot thread.

It's just the hole sun baked salt/sand/mud/water mix that is the big deal. I have all your basics I learned here and bought ALL the products. I am willing to allways take my time and do this stuff correctly.

Thank you people this is only my 3rd post and you all are on it MAN I get a reply in less than 2 hours WOW.

Welcome Jimmy!

Carguy and INTEL gave you great advice.

Take your time and wash it carefully.

Good Luck and welcome to the community!

Jimmy,

No worries....I have the same color on my Jetta and you should have seen this pig when I bought it....rough, rough shape. Plus...my detailing schedule in the winter is severely cut back since I have no garage...and I know all about the baked on dirt and salt...believe me.

Check my signature for pics on the condition of my paint....original too!

Because you are using Zaino you should wash with Dawn the first time. If you are worried about how dirty your car is, wash with Z7 first, then Dawn, then Z7. No need to dry in between. That way the nice Z7 wash will float away the bad grit. I'm not sure how good Dawn is at that - not very would be my guess.

After you wash and carefully dry your car, and possibly clay (I'll bet it could use clay at least on the lower panels) - QD using Z6 with your new MF towels (wash them 1 time first in your washer). This will ensure that your surface is nice and clean. I don't always wash after claying the car - others do. I feel that when you use the Z7 solution as a lube the car looks pretty darn clean at that point, and the Z6 will make it more so. Then use Z1 (if you don't have ZFX), or go directly to your Z2/Z5 with ZFX.

This is my friends Accord that I have been helping him work on for a while now. I have been teaching him how to use a polisher. I started him out on the Megs DA v1. He was getting the hang of it but needed some work. After several times practicing and working with him he began to get the hang of it. Is he ready for a full correction on a Ferrari, no but he is doing well enough to polish out the large flat panels on his car.

I then tried to teach him how to use a rotary, he was doing ok at it he just needs practice. He hasn?t developed the eye and the touch yet. You can see some of his rotary work in the pics below.
Every panel was attacked differently because some sections of the car had already been tackled months prior as this was a work in progress kind of thing. I am only highlighting the roof and hood because that is what I spend my time on while he spent time clearing up wash induced swirls on the sides of the car.

Process: (every panel was different)
Roof:
-Rotary, 3m BP, TufBuf wool, 105
-Rotary, 3m BP, Orange, menz 203
-Megs DA, Gray, 205

Hood:
-Rotary, 3m BP, Orange, Menz 203
-Megs DA, Gray, 205

-Everything was given a coat of Power Lock at the end

Here is me taping off the car. Some hate doing it but I personally enjoy prepping the car for work.

If you look right above the door you can see left over sanding marks addressed later on.

A page out of Mike?s book. These towels can?t soak up water for anything but they excel in catching polish splatter

Now here is my buddy?s handywork with a rotary. He was house sitting while my family was on vacation and he asked if he could work on his car while I was gone. I said sure knock yourself out. Here is the result. It looks a lot worse that it really was so I cant beat him up too bad over it.

Here is some left over sanding marks from where some bodywork was done prior to him getting the car.

Here you can see that there is still some water etching but we didn?t feel the need to chase them any further.

That is what I worked on Saturday. My buddy now has a corrected car. He is not allowed to wash it until I really teach him how to use the 2bm.

All questions, comments, and criticisms are welcome.

Jon

Jon,
As I told you before. You are a very generous person, and a good friend. The things that you do for others, is very rare for a person of your age. Please let your parents know that I said that they did a great job of raising you.
I am proud to call you my friend!!!!!

btw, great job on the car as well.:hurray:
