I think I messed up big time. Here is my story.

I have a 98 white camry, it had alot of scratch marks, dirt that couldn't be removed, and oxidation all over. So I took the 2000 grit sandpaper, and wetsanded the car, all the scratches are now gone, it's perfectly smooth however it is very dull, no shine at all.

so i took it to a local detailer, assuming that a wax shop would bring back the shine. however, he informed me that he can't preform any detailing becuase the clear coat has been stripped off the car.

 what should i do now? the paint is in very good condition, it's just missing the clear coat.

should i go to maaco and let them spray clear coat on it?

thanks

Why did you wetsand it? Was this due to advice from someone else?

Paint is always very dull after wetsanding. It needs to be polished out with a rotary and a compound to bring back the gloss. If you don't have a rotary and other necessary supplies, you certainly shouldn't have wetsanded the car.

Are you sure it's missing the clearcoat, or are you just believing the guy?

NO don't go to Maaco to have them spray clear on it. It will more than likely just flake off in no time anyway.

I couldn't remove the scratches by any rubbing compound, so I figured a very fine sandpaper should do the trick, and it did. but now, no more gloss.

im not sure if i removed the clear coat.

Take an applicator pad or towel (one that isn't white) and rub some rubbing compound onto the car. If your towel or applicator turns white, it means there is white paint coming off of your car (the clear is gone).

:( It seems like I did go through the clear on some spots, while other parts still have clear on them.

What do you guys recommend? Thanks

Ouch! I suggest you find someone from this forum to come take a look at the car. From the sound of it, you are proabably not experienced enought to tell the difference b/w what can and can't be fixed. HOw long did you let the paper soak? How much force did you use while sanding?

Did you research what your were doing before you actually did it? Did you read the forums at all?

You may very well have ruined the pain but let someone with experience take a look before you take any other drastic measures.

Good luck with this. I honestly hope it works out for you.

Yep.

High speed rotary and some compound, then polish.

bineabble just stopped by.

The car is pretty dull signifying that the wetsanding was effective. The marks were random in some areas but for the most part, it was a smooth finish. I Spray and Wiped the fender and 1/4 of the hood. I then hit it with the rotary and a LC Foamed Wool Pad with Hi-Temp Extreme Cut x 2 @ 1500 rpm. The gloss came back with no burnt spots letting me know that there is still plenty of clear left (no loss of depth either).

I plan to detail it within 2 months. Stay tuned...

Glad to see you could help out a fellow Autopian. when you get to detail it, some pics would be appreciated. nice to know there are people willing to take the time to set the resord straight. I am sure you have put his mind at ease. keep us posted if you can :up

flatstick: You can always count on pictures from me. It is a white Camry so pictures will be a bit of a chore to get right, but I will do what I can.

And I was thinking initally of giving it to Maaco!!

I'm so glad I came here!! I was very happy to see that gloss back again. Thanks to GSRstilez!

That is good to hear. I like to see what can be done if you build your knowledge. I am sure your pics will show the final product. wish we could have some type of Autopian meet. would love to pick your brain along with others from the area. thanks again for helping out a guy in need. glad he came to you for advice. :hifive:
