Help with wheel crud

WAS

Driven
Hi all,

I've got a set of wheels that are causing me some trouble. See the pics below, but basically they have some caked on residue. I don't know what it is, it's not asphalt and it's not brake dust. It's hardened on there as if it were cement, but it's not cement either. I *can* scratch it off if I apply enough pressure, but it's killer on the nails. I've tried Nevr-dull and wheel polishing cream, not a lot of luck (at least, too much time spent vs what comes off). Also already tried degreaser, didn't work either. Any ideas ?

The wheel finish is deteriorating. If you can get rid of the "dirt", you'll probably find the wheel finish is starting to go underneath.

it look like the chrome is failing, but the photos are small. Try using some P21S polishing soap-it has some impressive results. Also power drill/ mothers cone with some 105 or an aggressive polish

Wheel acid should do the trick as long as they're painted or chrome. It will loosen it up so just light aggitation will lift it away.

btw -

I moved this thread to the Car Detailing sub-section.

Thanks to all with the suggestions thus far. These wheels, as far as I can tell, are NOT clear coated. From what has been removed already (which is quite a bit actually), the chrome seems to be fine, so I don't think it's failing. Underneath this mysterious "crud" is clean, reflective, brand-new-like chrome.

Probably just years of not cleaning and sealing. Good to know the chrome is still in good shape. Once it starts corroding, it's all over.

So what are you using to correct this?

Well, it's going to go in for a bit of a more aggressive bath, then back to Nevr-dull and see what happens.
