Help with scratches

My first post. I've found the answers to about all my questions with the search function, but need some advice. My stepson (bless his little heart) somehow managed to hit the wrong button on the garage door opener and bounced the garage door off the trunk. It doesn't appear to be through the clear. I have a PC, FI-II and #9. Before, I have used a CMA orange pad w/FI-II on another car, and barely got the swirls out. I'll try the FI-II with a yellow pad, but if it doesn't work what's next? What is the next step in abrasiveness in 3m products, or should I try FI-II with a wool pad? I'm pretty much a rookie with the PC, so if I'm in over my head I'll either live with them or take it to a professional.

I'd suggest exhausting all your current combinations of products and pads before spending more money. The PC is a great little machine but it can't do the things a rotary can so there may not a be point to buying even more polishes when the job is best tackled by a pro and a rotary polisher.



But first I'd try the wool pad and the most aggressive polish I had which sounds like the FI2. The wool pad will give you more cutting power and generate some heat and both will help level the paint around the scratches.



If you have a magnifying glass you should take a close look at the scratches; hopefully they'll look OK but they might be worse than you think.



Final option is to consider having a pro detailer buff out the scratches as I mentioned. Good luck and let us know how things work out for you.
