HELP! Swirl marks on hood!

I have a black 2001 VW GTI and I wash and polish/wax her all the time. My usual routine is 3M SMR followed by 3M IHG and then topped off with Meguairs Gold Class wax. I have noticed in the sun that my hood looks very bad and is filled with hairline scratches and swirls. I think the more I polish and wax the hood, the worse it gets.My friend has a PC 7424 buffer, should I give this a try? Any tips on applying the polish and wax? Thanks

make 100% sure you are using MF towels, or 100% coton MADE IN AMERICA!! NOT PAKASTAN!!! If your not the scratched are coming from the towels.

You don't want to use 3MSMR as your USUAL routine.

Use true abrasive only when you need to. You only have that much clear coat layer to play with.

If you work the SMR by hand chances are you might not have work it long enough to break it down and you might be seeing scratches caused by the SMR.

Borrow the PC from your friend and get rid of the swirls; then seal it up with IHG/Wax.

Get the best Wash mitts/towels you can get to wash/dry the car.

First thing to do is to go to Autopia University and than buy the detailing Ebook.

It's all in the prep work "polishing contamination removal" and the day to day care washing and quick detailing.

You also need the proper tools Micro Fiber towels or 100% cotton towels, foam applicator pads, cotton wash mitt, two wash buckets, and on and on.

Swirls come from one thing YOU! bad washing-drying techniques, bad polishing techniques., and with a black car doing all this correctly is a PITA.

Lets start with polishing use nothing but foam, 100% cotton terry or Micro fiber applicator pads. Apply polishes using stright- line motions "the way air moves over the car as you drive" never use circles. Keep polishing till the polishing is just about dry, a PC polisher can be a big help.

also do a search or two, their is much more to detailing than one would ever think, just read and read and read this forum.

Should I use the PC buffer to apply the polish and then buff it off and should I buff the paint with the PC after I am done with the final coat of wax?

I would use the PC to apply the polish but remove it by hand. The machine is not as accurate when it comes to removing a product as you are.

You want to layer your wax on as the final step. If you put wax on your car and then use a polish you will be stripping your car.

Yes, I know that a polish cleans the paint while the wax protects.

Should I use the buffer to apply the wax or just the polish? Thanks

Hi, I'm completely new to this detailing stuff. Would someone please tell me what SMR and PC mean? Both terms were used in this thread.
