hello. i need help. i purchased the car new 1.5 years ago. last week i clayed the car for the first time. i used mothers clay with instant detailer. when i clayed i did not dry the car first. i mixed instant detailer with the wet surface. could that be the problem. after claying i still see a lot of red dots i cannot remove. today i washed the car and the paint is really rough like sandpaper.

the car is parked by a freeway most of the time. It is driven on the freeway most of the time where there are a lot of construction trucks. i am worried the paint is damaged. can it be saved.

2002 Volkswagen Reflex Silver

1.5 Years Ago: Dawn, Zaino Z1, Zaino Z2, Zaino Z6, No Clay

Nine Months Later: Dawn, Zaino Z1, Zaino Z2, No Clay

Now: Dawn, Clay

the first half of the year i used Zaino Z7 for regular washes. The second half of the year till now i have been using Dawn for regular washes (i know :nono ). Dawn seems to clean the car better than car soap.

what should i do? buy a stronger clay? or reclay with a dry surface? what if the clay does not remove the red spots (industrial fallout :scared ). maybe i used dawn as a car soap and it stripped the coat of Zaino making it more contaminated. i need suggestions to make my car smooth again. PLEASE? THANK YOU!

Do those spots look like rust or is it something like paint specks? I'm thinking if you can feel them, then is paint or sap. The rust spots can be removed with the clay, just take your time and do a thorough job. I wouldn't think that mixing the QD with water should do any harm but you may need to wash the car again after you clay. If the spots are paint specks/sap then you'll need some kind of prep solvent like Acrysol to remove them. Once that is done definitely wash the car again.

Once you get your Zaino on the paint you shouldn't wash with Dawn anymore until you want to strip it off and start the process all over. I don't use Zaino but from what I read the whole point of the Dawn wash is to prep the surface for its application. You should use the Zaino wash (don't know the number) or a car shampoo for your regular washing.

EDIT: Do you have a picture of these spots?

thank you for replying.

i cannot feel the red spots. today i clayed a small area again and it did not come off. i think the quick detail makes the car smooth but one week later it will be rough again. i put a coat of mothers wax on top until i know what to do. i will try to get pictures.

This might be a good case for AutoInt's "ABC" system and a sorta-aggressive claying during the "B" step. If that doesn't work, a paint cleaner/polish would be the next thing to try.

Chances are they are what's known as rail dust. I have this on my 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg and I've clayed a couple of times.

I keep thinking that I've got it taken care of and then they magically appear again. Of course, I can never tell 100% that it's the exact same same spot.

The "recurring rust blooms" are the reason some of us use the ABC stuff. I dunno if it'll work after the vehicle's not new anymore, though.

Clay is better than nothing, but I used to have them come back after I'd clayed them away. Then I started ABCing my new vehicles and that pretty much fixed it. Now, anything I get like that is, I believe, from new contamination.
