Help getting started as a PT detailer

Hi guys, I've been detailing cars for about 11 years in the Buffalo, NY area and have been getting more and more advanced with techniques and abilities as time has passed. I do have a full time job which I am keeping, and will be trying to get more detailing work for weekends around my work schedule. Usually I do details for friends, family and some co-workers currently but would like to get more legitimate and into a "legal" business of some sorrt. I am not so concerned with finding customers or anything like that, its the legal aspects I am having a lot of questions about. I have made some business cards and am working on a website right now, but not sure what else I need/should do from here.

Should I have a name registered, or obtain a tax ID number, become an LLC etc.? I am not sure on how to proceed forther with this as well as what is/is not necesarry to do. There are a lot of links in other posts that I intend on reading soon, but if anyone has some first hand advice, that always seems best. Any assistance would be appreciated!:)

venompwr2: It's good to see another detailer on here from Buffalo. Like you, I have a full time job and do this on the weekends or when my schedule permits. I'm in the same process as you, but I may be leaving the area soon.

Local business license, business structure (sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, S-Corp, corporation etc.), and business insurance.

There does tend to be a certain order that things need to get done because doing one thing requires you to do another first.

For example, when I got set up here in WI my first order was to file the articles of organization for the LLC. I needed those articles and a FEIN (tax ID) to set up my business bank account. I needed a bank account to get my WI Sales/Use tax license (business license). I needed all of those to get my business insurance quote.

I think this would probably be the same order as most places to get everything set up. Good luck!
