Help - Can't Remove All the KSG

I used AIO on my red car then used SG but only had time to SG the hood. Planning to do the rest of the car in a day or two (after washing of course).

I applied the SG to the hood with a Sonus Der Wonder applicator and let it dry 30 minutes. Then I thoroughly hand-buffed it off with a Concours buffing towel. When viewed in good light I can still see traces of the SG left. I tried to remove it with Klasse Acrilic Spritz, but can't get it all off. I thought I put the SG on very thin, but apparently not thin enough.

1. How can I remove the remaining SG? I don't have a PC, so I need to do it by hand.

2. I want to avoid this problem when I apply SG to the rest of the car. I have read threads about using a WOWO method with SG rather than waiting for it to dry. My question is, if I wipe it off shortly after applying it, am I just removing all or most of it, so there wouldn't be enough SG left on the surface to provide good protection?

Try pulling your car out into the sun and let the hood warm up, that should help loosen it up to some degree. I would still use the Acrylic Spritz to help take it off also.

I recently applied SG on two vehicles and had the same problem. I found (per the recommendations here) letting it sit for 8-12 hours seems to help make it easier to release. The other thing I noticed was that its helpful to have excellent lighting as its easy to miss a spot here or there.

I originally went with the Klasse pair based on history of car during the winter hours. After some time here, I've change my ways and expect that I will be doing a little more care during the winter months. As a result I just ordered some DP polish sealant and Max WAX. I haven't decide if I'm completely removing the SG or topping with Max. Depends on the weather and my free time.

dalemccl - I think it could be two things..One you may have put too much SG on, it really does need very thin layers...and two I think you possibly should try a different towel. I once put SG on too thick and tried buffing it off with a soft microfiber towel, which just was not working. I switched to a waffle weave type drying mf, and the stuff came off without much complaint..

Thanks to all for the suggestions for removing the KSG.

Can anyone comment on my 2nd question -- whether using a wipe on - wipe off method of applying KSG, with only a minute of drying time would provide good protection - or would it just remove most of the KSG if it doesn't have a chance to dry?

Thanks.

The easiest removal I've seen is a MF bonnet using a PC, but realize you don't have a pc. The second easiest is sparingly using a spritz of distilled water ... and I agree with Lightman as a waffle weave just might save the day too.

I could be wrong, but I'm not convinced you get the same effect with KSG if/when you wipe on, wipe off. I think the acrylic needs to set on the surface some before the wipe down. I don't know about a day (or a week) but I think an hour is better than a minute.

dalemccl:

There is a split in the Klasse community over the effectiveness of the WOWO (wipe on/wipe off) method for using SG.

For a good discussion of the merits of the WOWO method - check out this thread from the Autopia hall of fame: http://autopia.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30989

After reading that thread you will have to decide for yourself whether you believe the WOWO method is as good as letting the SG dry before buffing.

I was unable to draw a firm conclusion myself and so I sort of compromise between the WOWO and the extended drying period (12-24 hours) and let SG dry for about 30 minutes before buffing.

I used WOWO the very first time with SG, and it came out quite good. It does not take long o do a whole car. I did a 2nd coat a week later after a wash. REMEMBER: VERY THIN-I used a dime-sized drop on a MF applicator per panel.

Can't help with the W-O-W-O as I'm in the other camp (though I do use W-O-W-O on black plastic trim...some does stay on there).

You might try fogging the surface with your breath while buffing off the KSG. I do this all the time and it works great for me.

FWIW, I experimented with thick, and I mean *goofy-thick* applications of KSG. The longer I let them set up (up to several days) the easier they buffed off. But none of them were really *hard* to buff off using a MF (I prefer suede-style MFs for KSG) and the breath-fogging.
