Hello all. LONG TIME lurker here in the forums. Been at the detailing thing for 13 years now (started when I was 12, believe it or not).

Now that I got a degree and saddled myself with debt (living the dream) i'm ready to take things to the next level by starting a mobile detailing business.

I know some do it from a truck and a trailer, some an Astro Van, some a Ford Econoline (E-Series) van, but I don't see many people using JUST the bed of the truck. I want to get an F-150 ext. cab with a 6.5 ft box, put a high series cap over the bed, and secure everything to the frame of the bed withOUT a trailer. I know it may be a pain climbing in and out of the truck to get at the generator, water tank, pressure washer, and Mytee Lite, but i'm going to get the bed side steps that Ford has, along with the pop up/out tailgate step to make things much easier. The cap I would be getting has the fiberglass side doors on both sides that will pop open so I can get at the bed as well so I think I wouldn't have much trouble going this route.

I want to avoid the trailer because of parking lot situations and storing the thing when not in use, and I don't want the full-size van because the F-150 will be my primary vehicle once the lease is up on my personal car (so that I can save the money!)

Does this sound ok or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Nick

I detail out of the bed of a Chevy S10 with no problem. I know a couple others who detail out of a pickup bed as well, so yeah, you can do it.

I can throw you a little insight into this, even though I usually work out of a 6x12 trailer.

Often times when I don't need my air compressor, generator, and every detailing tool known to man, and when I know I will be in a place with no way for a trailer to get in and out of I will go without the trailer.

I don't even have a bed cover, I just throw my detail bag, microfibers, a tote with assorted chemicals, brushes, buckets, etc. in the truck, and head out. I love my trailer because of the notoriety, advertisement, and convenience of having a large amount of room, but you could do this business out of a hatchback car if you had to. It's all about making sure you aren't overloading yourself with equipment, using efficient chemicals such as ONR, and organizing yourself.

I detail out of the bed of and F150 ext cab 6 1/2ft bed. I don't have a cap, but a tri fold tonneau cover. Everything fits in the bed except my Eco pod. I put that in my backseat. I have pictures on my website and Facebook page.

I will PM you a link that will take you to the website of one of my competitors. He has a picture of his F150 outfitted with a canopy with the flip up side access panels and a roll out shelf thing for the bed that all his hoses and stuff are mounted to.
