Heavy Neglected G35 + HD Polish Review!

A buddy of mine picked this car up a few weeks ago and finally had a vehicle worth spending money with me too get detailed. His previous vehicles all had those "<$1000" paint jobs and were not even worth messing with. Well he picked this G35 up and....bad is all you can say. Never cared for and driven through a car wash most likely once a week for 6 years. With the paint being on the hard side...too get the level of imperfections in the paint took some serious neglect. So I figured it would be a good one too test HD Polish against.

I have already been using HD Polish and already come to the conclusion that it will be replacing most if not all of my polishes/finishing polishes. This product is nothing short of amazing.

Now for the befores...once it was dropped off this was the first time I had seen it in the sun and I thought it couldnt look any worse than when I saw it under low light...

Now to note!!!! Customer was only paying for my 2-Step Package, meaning I will do as much correction as I can in two steps. This one only landed about 75% correction. Once I removed the years of neglect from the surface and the MASS amount of scratches there were so many straight line RIDS that the whole car would need too be wet sanded to get over 90% correction. This thing was terrible. Customer just wanted it to look better than it did.

Now onto my testing. I had about 24 hours before he had to pick the car up, so I had to make my testing quick. I taped off three areas on the hood. One area for straight HD Polish as in doing a 1-Step on a heavy neglected vehicle, one area with Uno + HD Polish to show how bad my Uno is an just too do a 3D product combo and the final area for the usual 105/300 MF Pad combo too cut and finish down with HD Polish.

Overall condition of the hood under shop lights and my LED.

Pretty terrible shape. So first area was a before picture of the Uno/HD Polish area...

15-9.jpg

After Uno...

20-9.jpg

Usual holograms and hazing that my Uno bottle leaves me with.

Now finished down with HD Polish...did a solid amount of correction with the terrible Uno and the Polish finished down nicely with no micromarring.

23-9.jpg

Now for the HD Polish 1 Step....before and after...

17-9.jpg

Using the Uber Yellow pad...it pretty much did very little correction. Glossed up the paint, but really lost too the scratches. Still a great one step product for softer, less neglected finishes, so I did not expect it too do much to this paint.

19-9.jpg

Now for the 105/300 area before and after...

21-9.jpg

Solid cut...now to finish down with Polish...

22-9.jpg

Good solid finish with no micromarring and great gloss.

I had one more test a little ways down with the use of a rotary so will get too that later. My overall opinions of Polish are that its an amazing product that will replace the use of M205 and PO85RD. I already disliked 205 because it doesnt down worth a damn and PO85RD is as B. Burnsworth put it "Trying to wipe an oilslick up with a microfiber." Great product, pita to get off the paint afterwards with the risk of inducing towel scratches on softer finishes. Polish finishes down amazing, cuts amazing and wipes right off.

Now back to having to hustle through this train wreck...

Another shot of the paint before any work...

When I got to starting and figuring out my combos, which testing the 105/300 in my review above showed me that that combo will not be what I need. After a few other tries with foam pads and the rotary I had to go all the way down to M105/Red Solo Wool Pad and my Dewalt849 to do any major correction on this paint in a reasonable time. Even had to cut at 2000-2200 rpms to make a dent in paint.

As I was doing the driver door wanted to get a good shot of the paint side by side after hitting the door with the rotary...

Took some time too also get some overall before pictures with my LED while I had the camera...

Had a good shot of the truck being able to see where I buffed too under normal overhead lighting...

Now having to really start cutting, I was down too the passenger fender as my last panel and wanted to do a quick test with using HD Polish with the rotary and too also get one really really good 50/50 shot. So taped up the fender and started cutting and polishing. My concerns with the HD Polish is that at speeds over 1400 rpms on the rotary the product is thin enough that it will sling. Even at 1000 rpms it has a very fine sling. It cuts and finishes GREAT with the rotary, but the only downside is the sling from the spin. Nothing major that I wont get around, just something I noticed.

Then how much of a color difference this is making too the car...

36-5.jpg

Finally after finishing cutting the whole car, Joey had just gotten there to help me finish the car as I had another job coming in the afternoon.

37-4.jpg

Nice and dusty. Once we got the dust wiped off, we both started polishing the paint with HD Polish and Uber Orange pads. Cut all the holograms out, finished down nicely and gave a great gloss. Afterwards had to do a solid wash on the car to clean up the mass amount of dust and jambs. Dried the car off and coated it with HD Poxy and took it outside for some afters...

AGAIN, even having to do a heavy cut with the rotary, I did not have the time and the customer was not paying for the additional time to do more cut. I was looking to really make a big difference in as fast as possible. Customer was more than happy with the outcome as it was 10x better than what it had looked like.

Looks good.

Too bad it is so acid etched, some look like they are over a half a mil deep.

Yeah even after cutting it so hard...granted it was somewhat fast...as maybe a few more hours with the wool pad would have yielded a little better results. I recommended too the owner that wet sanding or painting is the only thing to completely bring back the condition of the paint.

That looks really good. What pads do you normally use with Megs 205? I usually use a Lake Country flat white pad and it usually finishes down decently for a one step. 205 with a white pad is kinda my "go to" for one steps but I'll be getting the HD Polish to test out too in hopes of a better replacement.

That's an incredible turnaround. That thing really was hammered. Shame too, they're pretty nice cars.

Great review and walk through! I really liked the results with Polish and the rotary, I have a beat up Ram 1500 I am going to try that on tomorrow.

Well done, the car looks great!

Great job, Mike. Not everyone wants the full DefCon One detail package, so you really need a go-to, knock-it-out process.

There are a lot of those cars around here that look rough. You could probably corner the market on hacked-up G's in Atlanta.

What was your final combo on that 50-50 fender shot? It really came out great, all things considered.

Nice job, I wish my G35 had the hard paint. My car has very soft paint and I guess everyone complained and the factory finally went to the hard paint and even placed a stick on the vehicle to say that the paint is hard.

What is wrong with your HD Uno? Or do you just not like Uno?

Also what are the little dot/specs in the paint after you polished it? Or is the paint metallic?
