Hear about the shooting?

Just caught it on the news. Haven't heard about it until now. Said it was the "deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history".
Gunman kills 32 in Virginia Tech rampage - Yahoo! News

Up until today, the "deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history" was right here in my town.

"Up until Monday, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard plowed his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself."

Talk about some SICK people these days. Everytime I turn on the news, it is nothing but death, killings, someone doing something horrible to a child, etc. etc...

Gun control activists to begin their spill on how guns (and not the people who misuse them) are the reason and how this wouldn't have happened if we couldn't own guns in 3....2....1........

It truly is a horrible story.

There are just some records that should never be broken. There are a lot of sick people in the world, but thankfully, there are more good people than bad. Unfortunately, the news rarely reports the good in the world because it doesn't catch peoples attention. Death and carnage gets them more ratings than joy and love. It does sound like the school botched this whole ordeal up a bit when they didn't notify the students though.

Pocket's sister goes to that school and fortunately she was not in either of those buildings, but she was close. I talked to her father and he and his wife are taking this very well...:10: If it was me, I'd have my daughter in my car and on the way home now:scared:

Sad that it happened all together. Like others will agree there are some sick people in this world and I'm glad people made it out but very angry that is happened and people had to die going to "SCHOOL"! People are F*ing crazy man, sick, or something. I don't even know.

It's so horrible!! I was shocked when I saw the news and just started crying. :( I'm glad that nothing happened to Pocket's sister. I can only imagine the trauma that she is going through. My heart goes out to the families of the victims and the survivors who have to live with this day for the rest of their lives. It's so tragic. :(

i know 2 people i went to high school with attend school there... one wasnt involved however the other one was in the 2nd shooting and broke his leg jumping from the building after seeing some of the people shot

This was horrible! There are four kids from my area attending VT, and one of them was amoung the dead.

Yes this has already started. There was some conversation on talk radio about this subject this morning. There are so many questions that will need to be addressed. I just hope other schools are able to learn from this, and put some type of system in place that would stop this from happening in the future.

At the same time, gun ownership activists will be saying how many lives could have been saved if students were allowed to pack heat in 3....2....1....

And what everyone should be doing is grieving and reflecting on what happened instead of trying to find somewhere to point the blame blindly.

I have yet to see that, however, already on major news outlets last night I saw people on there talking about how a gun ban would solve all the world's problems. Just like the ban on illegal drugs keeps illegal drugs off the streets, and out of people hands.

Next thing you know, we'll all be saying if we kept South Koreans from coming to the country, how we could have avoided the shooting.

Jared...please link me to that story where it was claimed that "a gun ban would solve all the world's problems". It would be interesting read. If you saw it on multiple news sites yesterday, then I'm sure you can find the story. I missed it, but then agan, I was watching the Sabres beat the Isles.

Both Fox News and Nancy Grace had people that commented on it (and by "it", I mean the fact that stuff like this could be completely prevented if gun ownership was illegal) numerous times. I think you can find the links to those shows (along with several others) if you want to see it.

Just to make my point a little more clear: The fact that people can own (and abuse) guns is no reason to look for a scapegoat reason to jump on the gun ban issue for the media. People need to take responsibility for their actions and quit blaming it on everything under the sun besides the choices they make.

:bigups :bigups

I hardly think Fox News is on the bandwagon to ban gun ownership. If Fox can rile up its base viewership by bringing on an anti-gun advocate to beat up, then they certainly will.

In the age of 24 hour news, they need to fill air time. Every network covering the tragedy as it unfolded yesterday was talking to whatever eyewitness, student, teacher, janitor, etc to try and fill the air. You'll hear from counselors, psychiatrists, therapists, homeland security people, cops, ex-cops and anyone else that might provide some light on things.

Although, I really don't think any person ever commented that "a gun ban would solve all the world's problems". I think that was more of an interpretation of what was heard than was actually said.

I'm sure colleges and universities all over the nation will be discussing how to prevent such a tragedy in the future. That's the real hope we should be looking for.

That's why I put it in quotes; no one actually made that statement, it's just the premsie of their argument. The fact that banning guns would solve/prevent these types of problems is asinine, because I doubt that the guy that did this used legal channels to obtain his weapons in the first place. In the days to come that this story stays in the news (until there's another media/celebrity who says something to hurt soemone else's feelings I would imagine) I would wager that the gun control issue will get bigger. To me, the media will exemplify again what is an increasing problem with American culture, and that is that no one wants to be responsible for their actions anymore. (Refer to my previous post.)

Many of you know that I am a target shooter and gun collector. I watch horrible incidents of this nature with a waiting for the other shoe to drop attitude. This is a terrible tragedy any way you look at it. Siting this incident Sarah Brady is once again insinuating that a weapons ban is the answer. For those who don't know she has fought hard to have the "assault weapons" ban of the Clinton era reinstated. This is a related quote: Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Regardless of which side of the argument one is on it isn't hard to see that the gun used in this tragedy, by most people's definition wasn't an "assault weapon". When it comes to firearms, love or hate them it takes little to get zealots from either side fired up. People need this time to mourn this is where our focus should be not out making an "I'm running for office" political statement.
